There Are No Lossless Transformations of Natural-Language Text

The limitations of AI in writing and its impact on thought processes

1AI and the Writing Process

AI tools can be used in the writing process for brainstorming and drafting. However, unedited outputs from these tools may not fully represent the author's thoughts. Therefore, authors must stand behind every sentence and ensure that documents reflect their own ideas before sharing them.

2The Importance of the Thought Process

The writing process is part of the thought process. Deciding what to emphasize and how to structure your ideas while writing helps you gain a deeper understanding of the topic. Skipping this process with AI can lead to a poorer understanding of the subject matter.

3The Role of Documents

Written artifacts like tech specs, project status updates, and incident retrospectives serve as 'proof of thought.' Outsourcing the creation of these documents to AI risks bypassing the thought process. Therefore, it's important to review AI-generated documents yourself.

4Readers' Time

Creating a document should take more time than reading it. Generating a long document from a short prompt and asking readers to spend their time on it can be seen as disrespectful. Readers can always talk to ChatGPT themselves if they want to. Therefore, it's crucial to make documents clear and concise before sharing them.

5Length and Quality

AI makes it easy to generate long documents, but these documents may contain many meaningless sentences that detract from the actual content. Instead of producing a long document from a short prompt, consider sharing the prompt itself. When editing with AI, be cautious not to obscure the meaning.

6Lossless Transformations

There are no lossless transformations of natural-language text. Every rewrite and rephrase changes the meaning of your writing. If these transformations are done by an entity that doesn't have the most detailed mental representation of what you were trying to communicate, information can be lost. Readers will appreciate hearing your thoughts, even at the expense of supposed 'polish.'
