1Rapid Change in Software Engineering

Since January 2024, software development processes have undergone significant transformation. The industry-wide adoption of large language models (LLMs) and AI tools is fundamentally changing traditional engineering approaches. The Pragmatic Engineer team is launching an essay competition to document this shift across startups and major tech companies. Participants will describe the transformation in software development within 3,000-10,000 words.

2Competition Details

The submission deadline is October 4, 2026. The best essays will be selected on October 20 and published on November 3. The grand prize is worth $10,000, including publication in The Pragmatic Engineer. The runner-up prize is $2,500 with publication rights. Participants must have personal software development experience and cannot use AI-generated content.

3Expected Essay Topics

Winning essays should address how software engineering culture is changing in companies, engineering approaches in 2026, or transitions to AI engineering. Perspectives from bootstrapped companies, traditional organizations, and post-2023 AI-focused startups will be evaluated. Essays are expected to include personal observations and concrete data.

4AI's Impact on Software Development

While companies like Uber integrate AI into development processes, firms like Ramp are building their own coding agents. According to The Pragmatic Engineer's in-depth analyses, processes that worked for years are now outdated. New AI tools are being used at every stage of the software lifecycle. This change is progressing too rapidly for weekly analyses to keep up.

5Participation Criteria and Rules

Only individuals with software development experience can participate. Team works and AI-generated content are not accepted. Essays must not have been published elsewhere before October 20, 2026. Participants should have experience causing service outages or pushing code to production. AI can be used as a research tool but all content must be human-written.

6Prize Categories

The competition has three main categories: In addition to the grand prize, special awards will be given to VC-free companies, non-digital-first traditional organizations, and post-2023 AI-focused startups. Quality essays from academia, government institutions, and open-source projects will also be evaluated. All winners will receive Pragmatic Engineer surprise packages.

7The Future of Software Engineering

While software development processes are radically changing at companies like Anthropic, projects like Codex shed light on future engineering approaches. The competition aims to document this transformation across different industries. Participants are expected to share how AI's integration into workflows has brought new, different, better, and worse changes to the tech industry.

8Importance for the Industry

This competition offers a unique opportunity to document the rapid transformation in software engineering. The Pragmatic Engineer will share insights from industry leaders to help understand AI's impact on software development. Winning essays will detail changes in engineering practices, tool evolution, and process transformations in depth.
