Community Canteen No.11 Transforms Urban Edge in Qinhuangdao
Verse Design creates vibrant social hub from transitional urban space in China's Aranya district.
1Project Location and Context
Canteen No. 11 is situated at the eastern edge of Aranya North Shore Art Bay in Qinhuangdao, China. Occupying a fragmented urban interface surrounded by apartments, retail spaces, a children's water park, and community streets, the project transforms a transitional corner into a gathering space. The architects aimed to create a focal point for community life in this urban setting.
2Design Philosophy
Verse Design approached the 1,000-square-meter project not as a standalone facility but as an opportunity to create a bright, welcoming public space. Their design turns an overlooked urban edge into a hub for interaction and daily community activities. The architecture complements the existing urban fabric while establishing its own distinctive identity through thoughtful spatial organization.
3Architectural Team and Collaborations
Led by principal architects Leon Dai and He Xiaojian, a six-member design team developed the project. Dalian Architectural Design & Research Institute handled construction documentation, while BRM Facade Technology was responsible for the curtain wall design. Qinghuangdao Qinbo Curtain Wall Decoration Engineering executed the facade construction, with lighting design by TUNGSTEN Studio completing the collaborative effort.
4Material and Technology Implementation
Constructed with materials supplied by CSG HOLDING, the building features contemporary facade systems that balance durability with aesthetic appeal. Material selections were carefully chosen to withstand local climate conditions while maintaining visual harmony. The lighting design creates dynamic atmospheres that change throughout the day, enhancing the user experience.
5Interior Design Approach
The interior design team, comprising Zhang Sanqiao, Dong Haopeng, and Zhou Yitong, created spaces that encourage community members to gather comfortably. Functional areas are arranged to maximize natural light penetration through strategic openings. Furniture selections and spatial configurations were carefully planned to foster social interaction among visitors of all ages.
6Community Impact
Beyond serving as a dining facility, the canteen has become a social hub for neighborhood residents. Its proximity to the children's water park makes it particularly popular with families. The project significantly contributes to Aranya's art-focused community life, establishing itself as an important public space that enhances social connectivity.
7Urban Transformation Case Study
This project by Verse Design serves as an exemplary model for transforming urban interfaces. By converting an underutilized transitional space into a well-planned public area, it demonstrates how thoughtful architecture can enhance community life. The approach offers replicable strategies for similar urban contexts seeking to activate marginal spaces.
8Architectural Significance
Canteen No. 11 reflects the evolution of public space design in contemporary Chinese architecture. Completed in 2026, the project stands out for its success in creating a space that meets functional needs while strengthening social bonds. It represents an important architectural contribution to Qinhuangdao's cultural landscape, showcasing how design can positively impact community dynamics.
