MVRDV designs Urban Revivo's Beijing flagship with color-shifting facade

A modern retail experience inspired by traditional roof tiles.

1Where Cultural Heritage Meets Contemporary Design

MVRDV reimagined Beijing's traditional architectural elements for Chinese fashion giant Urban Revivo. The store's exterior features suspended aluminum panels inspired by the city's iconic roof tiles. With dichroic coating that shifts between blue and purple in daylight, this dynamic facade reflects the brand's global vision while respecting local context.

2From Moon Gates to Modern Geometries

The interior transforms traditional Chinese moon gates into seven circular openings. As visitors move through the four-level store, these forms gradually evolve into arches, rounded rectangles, and inverted curves. Changing material palettes on each floor create distinct experiential zones, blending heritage with contemporary retail design.

3Iconic Corner in Sanlitun

The 4,120 sqm flagship occupies a strategic corner along Sanlitun West Street, Beijing's luxury retail hub. Positioned between the South and North Villages, this location reinforces the brand's rising status in China. The facade design respects the area's architectural fabric while establishing a striking visual identity through its innovative tile system.

4Curated Experience with Six Bold Rooms

The store features six thematic 'Bold Rooms' exhibition spaces. From the Soft Room to the Unexpected Room, each area is specially designed for different collections. Avant-Garde Rooms in the building's atriums showcase featured products in glass displays. This approach offers visitors a discovery-driven shopping journey through carefully crafted environments.

5From Hutong Texture to Facade Details

Grey brick surfaces inside reference Beijing's narrow hutong alleys. MVRDV designed every detail - from custom furniture to clothing racks - to align with Urban Revivo's identity. The illuminated UR monogram integrated into the textured facade creates a changing visual effect between day and night, becoming a distinctive architectural signature.

6Local Roots, Global Ambition

This project exemplifies how architecture can express a Chinese brand's international expansion strategy. While honoring traditional references through material choices, innovative techniques like the color-shifting facade demonstrate global aspirations. It sets a new benchmark for synthesizing cultural authenticity with retail innovation in flagship store design.
