DP6 adds painter's studio to renovated home in Delft
DP6 architectuurstudio renovated a historic home in Delft, adding a garden-facing painter's studio.
1Renovation of a historic home
DP6 architectuurstudio transformed a rear house in the historic center of Delft, creating a living and working space for a creative couple. While the entrance and garage face the canal, daily life is directed towards the greener and quieter garden side. This design allows the home to retreat from the street, offering a more peaceful environment.
2Garden connection with glass façades
The house and the new painter's studio feature fully glazed façades that face each other across the garden. These glass façades can be almost entirely opened, extending the interior space outdoors and creating an uninterrupted sightline from the front door through the house, garden, and into the studio. The garden becomes a shared room between the two structures.
3Oak and celadon tones
Inside the existing house, DP6 introduced new elements crafted in oak, including an open staircase, kitchen, wardrobe, and fireplace unit. These warm textures bring visual calm to the historic structure while establishing a consistent material language across different rooms. Celadon-colored surfaces interrupt the timber, adding depth and softness to the palette.
4Design of the painter's studio
Located at the far end of the plot, the painter's studio is constructed from Douglas fir and features a semi-open wooden canopy along the garden-facing façade. This canopy filters direct daylight before it enters the workspace while providing a sheltered outdoor seating area. The broad glazed frontage visually connects the studio to the house while maintaining the necessary separation for work.
5Illumination with northern light
A continuous skylight strip above the studio draws northern light deep into the space, providing the soft and even illumination traditionally prized by painters. This design transforms the studio into not just a workspace but also a place for creation. The northern light ensures an ideal working environment for the artist.
6The role of the garden
The garden is designed not just as a space between the house and studio but as a shared area connecting the two structures. Green tones and natural materials allow the interiors to harmonize with the outdoor landscape. This approach creates a subtle connection without filling every corner with plants.
7Material choices and details
Natural materials like oak and Douglas fir used in the project give both the house and studio a warm and inviting atmosphere. Celadon-colored surfaces and glass façades support the modern and minimal design style. These material choices ensure the project's aesthetic and functional success.
8A retreat from the city
DP6 organized this project as a gradual retreat from the city. The sequence from the canal-side house to the garden and studio ends not with another living space but with a place designed for creation. This design offers the creative couple a peaceful living environment and an inspiring workspace.
