Which Samsung S Pens Support SmartThings Find Tracking?
Only the S Pen Pro model offers official tracking capabilities via Samsung's network.
1Tracking Limitations Explained
While modern Galaxy devices like the S26 Ultra can warn users if an S Pen is left behind, this feature is merely a proximity reminder. It does not provide real-time location tracking. The built-in pens lack the necessary hardware to be located via the SmartThings Find network once they are separated.
2The S Pen Pro Exception
The S Pen Pro is the only stylus officially compatible with SmartThings Find. Launched in January 2021, this $100 accessory features a rechargeable battery, a USB-C port, and a dedicated pairing button. Unlike standard integrated pens, it supports active Bluetooth connectivity, which is essential for the device to be tracked remotely.
3Compatibility and Hardware Constraints
The S Pen Pro supports various devices, including the Note 10, Note 20 series, and S21 through S26 Ultra models. However, its larger size prevents it from fitting into the built-in slots of these phones. This creates a functional trade-off between the convenience of an integrated pen and the security of tracking.
4Bluetooth Misconceptions
Bluetooth capability does not automatically grant tracking functionality. Although models like the Note 9 and subsequent Ultra series pens use Bluetooth for Air Actions, they cannot be located via SmartThings. Samsung removed Bluetooth from the S25 and S26 Ultra pens, further distancing standard integrated styli from the S Pen Pro's tracking features.
5Enabling Offline Finding
To track an S Pen Pro, users must first enable Offline finding within the SmartThings app settings. This process requires charging the pen and pairing it via the Connection button. Once configured, the device can be located on a map, and users can even trigger a blinking light to assist in physical recovery.
6Network-Based Location Relay
The tracking mechanism relies on other Galaxy devices to detect the powered-on S Pen Pro via Bluetooth. These devices anonymously relay the pen's location to Samsung servers. The accuracy of this system depends on the density of the Galaxy network and whether those nearby devices have the Offline finding setting enabled.
7Managing Lost Integrated Pens
For standard integrated S Pens, users must rely on the Warn if S Pen is left behind setting found in Advanced features. While this does not pinpoint the pen's location, it serves as a preventative measure. If the pen is permanently lost, replacements for the S26 Ultra currently cost $55.
8Strategic Product Differentiation
Samsung's ecosystem strategy highlights a clear distinction between integrated utility and standalone professional accessories. By limiting tracking to the S Pen Pro, the company maintains the slim form factor of its flagship phones while offering a premium, trackable alternative for users who prioritize device security over internal storage convenience.
