The new electric sedan priced under €14,000 aims to rival Tesla.

1BYD's new electric sedan

BYD has unveiled its new electric sedan, the Qin Max. Similar in size to the Tesla Model 3, the car stands out with its sub-$15,000 price tag. Measuring 191.6 inches (4,866 mm) long, the sedan is 2.9 inches longer than a Mercedes-Benz C-Class and 5.7 inches longer than a Tesla Model 3. BYD aims for a strong position in the B-segment with this model.

2Competitive pricing strategy

The plug-in hybrid version of the Qin Max starts at 99,900 yuan (about $13,700), while the fully electric model begins at 109,900 yuan (around $15,000). These prices are nearly half that of a Tesla Model 3 in China. A total of nine variants are offered, covering both hybrid (DM-i) and fully electric (EV) options.

3Revolutionary charging technology

Thanks to BYD's second-generation Blade battery and Flash Charging technology, the Qin Max can charge from 10% to 70% in just 5 minutes, and from 10% to 97% in about 9 minutes. Even in extreme cold conditions down to -30°C, charging time increases by only 3 minutes. The system delivers up to 1,500 kW through a single connector, setting a new standard in charging speed.

4Performance and range details

The all-electric Qin Max offers two motor options: 120 kW (161 hp) and 240 kW (322 hp). With estimated ranges of 329 miles and 391 miles on China's CLTC cycle (though real-world performance may vary), these models cater to different needs. The hybrid version combines a 1.5-liter gasoline engine (74 kW) with a 175 kW (235 hp) electric motor.

5Premium interior features

BYD hasn't skimped on the Qin Max's interior. A 15.6-inch central touchscreen, augmented reality head-up display (AR-HUD), and a built-in refrigerator come as standard. The God’s Eye B driver assistance system, available for an additional 12,000 yuan (about $1,650), provides support for both city and highway driving.

6Limited market strategy

The Qin Max will initially be available only in China. As of August 2026, there are no plans for a US, European, or other international market launch. If it does expand overseas eventually, customs duties and import taxes on Chinese EVs could significantly increase its price.

7BYD's market strategy

Following a 45.62% sales decline for the Qin series in the first half of 2026, BYD aims to revitalize the lineup with the Qin Max. With record-breaking charging speeds and an accessible price, the Qin Max could strengthen BYD's position in the EV market. The company intends this model to be a strong alternative to Tesla, particularly in the domestic market.

8Impact on the EV market

The launch of the Qin Max could create significant waves in China's EV market. Its competitive price and fast-charging capability may accelerate consumer adoption of electric vehicles. BYD's move could pressure other manufacturers to develop similar technologies and lower prices, potentially creating industry-wide momentum.
