Celebrating 5 Years of Jetpack Compose

The revolutionary Android UI toolkit marks its fifth anniversary

Android Developers Blog2 min

1Origins and Evolution

Jetpack Compose was announced on July 28, 2021 with version 1.0. The toolkit promised to simplify native interface development on Android and today powers 68% of top 1000 apps. Over five years, it expanded from mobile to TVs, WearOS, and even smart glasses via Jetpack Compose Glimmer. Google engineers Clara Bayarri, Romain Guy and Chet Haase shared Compose's early development story in an interview.

2Technological Transformation

Compose began as an idea for declarative layouts with XML embedded in Kotlin. Merging with the Views toolkit team, it evolved into a full-fledged UI toolkit leveraging compiler plugins and Kotlin's power. During pre-alpha before 2021, community feedback from Android Dev Challenge through puppy apps and weather apps helped shape version 1.0.

3Material Design Journey

Compose launched with Material 2 components before adding Material 3 Expressive support. The complete shift to Compose-focused design systems marks the end of findViewById era. At Google I/O 2026, Google announced all new UI development will happen exclusively in Compose, with Views toolkit entering maintenance mode.

4Community Contributions

JetBrains expanded the ecosystem through Compose Multiplatform for desktop, iOS and web developers. Standout community contributions include sinasamaki's ribbon modifier, Saket Narayan's telephoto and Touch Robot libraries, and Jake Wharton's mosaic for terminals. Resources like JetpackCompose.app's Dispatch, AndroidWeekly and jetc keep developers updated.

5New APIs and Capabilities

Compose 1.11 introduced adaptive APIs like FlexBox, Grid, MediaQuery and Styles, elevating premium UI development. Version 1.12 coming soon will offer significantly more than 1.0 five years ago. Compose has transitioned from being just a tool to becoming the UI development standard in Android ecosystem.

6Cross-Platform Expansion

Compose's success extends beyond mobile to TVs, wearables and smart glasses via Glimmer support. JetBrains' Compose Multiplatform enables desktop and web developers to benefit. Google's Compose-first strategy aims to deliver consistent development experience across all platforms.

7Developer Experience

Compose's declarative approach lets developers achieve more with less code. @Composable functions and components like LazyColumn simplify complex interfaces. Numerous community-developed libraries and modifiers address specific needs. Android Google Developer Experts (GDEs) also contribute to ecosystem growth.

8Future Vision

Compose's success stems from Google's Toolkit team and a vibrant open-source community. The next five years promise more platform support, advanced animation capabilities and AI-powered design tools. Material Design's complete focus on Compose heralds a new era in UI development workflows.
