The Rising Threat of Synthetic Identity Fraud in Machine Identities
Fabricated identities silently accumulate privileges within systems.
1What is Synthetic Identity Fraud?
Unlike traditional identity theft, synthetic fraud involves attackers blending real and fake data to create new identities. Since these identities don't belong to any real person, misuse can go undetected for long periods. The same method is now being used against machine identities.
2Risk to Machine Identities
While organizations focus on protecting non-human identities (NHIs), fabricated machine identities that were never legitimately created are being overlooked. Attackers can create new admin-level identities that blend with the environment instead of hijacking existing accounts.
3Convincing Attributes
Fake machine identities hide by existing in the correct domain, carrying plausible metadata, and requesting permissions similar to legitimate NHIs. Among thousands of service accounts, these identities appear as routine workloads, escaping notice.
4Creation Methods
Attackers create fake machine identities through three main methods: rogue service accounts, fake domain controllers (DCShadow), and shadow credentials. Each method aims to create an identity that appears trusted by the system but is entirely fabricated.
5Difference from Synthetic Personas
Machine identity forgery differs from synthetic personas designed to deceive humans. Here, the goal is to create a fake machine entity with real privileges inside systems, answering to no human owner.
6Detection Challenges
Unlike stolen identities, fabricated machine identities have no real owner to trigger alerts for suspicious behavior or data leaks. The rapid growth of NHIs also makes it harder to spot unmonitored identities.
7AI's Role
As autonomous AI agents gain the ability to dynamically generate credentials and spawn new agents, the line between legitimate and fake identities blurs. This automation makes it easier for attackers to operate.
8Defense Strategies
Organizations must adopt strong governance models to prevent fake identities from infiltrating systems. Assigning ownership to all NHIs is one of the most effective ways to stop unauthorized identities from accumulating and persisting.
