David Chipperfield Transforms Historic Building into Museum
The historic Pereda Building in Santander is reborn as Faro Santander.
1New Identity for a Historic Building
David Chipperfield Architects has transformed the historic Pereda Building in Santander into Faro Santander, a new center for art, culture, and technology. Formerly the Banco Santander headquarters, the building now offers 10,000 square meters of usable space, enriching the city's cultural life.
2Preserving Architectural Heritage
Constructed in 1795, the building features a layered interior reflecting different architectural periods. Chipperfield's intervention preserves these historic elements while making the building more open and accessible.
3Central Arch as the Spine
The central arch, the project's main organizational element, has become the building's spine. Partially enclosed, it now connects exhibition floors and makes movement visible, enhancing the visitor experience.
4Eco-Friendly Design
The project reduces waste and carbon emissions by preserving and adapting the existing structure. Sustainable solutions like geothermal energy and green roofs create an environmentally friendly cultural building.
5Cultural Program
Five exhibition levels, a café terrace, and a restaurant are complemented by an auditorium and technical infrastructure in three basement levels, supporting Faro Santander's cultural program.
6Connecting with the City
The project links the building with the city and Santander Bay, merging architecture with art and urban life. This transformation creates a modern cultural center while preserving historic heritage.
