Meta Unveils Ultra-Light VR Glasses and Smart Glasses Lineup
New $1,300 VR glasses weigh just 100g with external processing unit launching in 2027.
1Revolutionary weight distribution
Meta's VR Glasses weigh only 100g by moving all processing to an external puck, making them five times lighter than Quest 3. The frames contain just displays, lenses, cameras and speakers, while the Snapdragon processor, battery and storage reside in a pocketable device connected via optical tether. This design eliminates the forehead pressure from traditional VR headsets, enabling comfortable extended use like watching full baseball games.
2Premium display technology
The 5K micro-OLED display delivers 37 pixels per degree with true blacks, certified for Dolby Vision and IMAX Enhanced. This represents a 48% improvement over Quest 3's LCD resolution, making text significantly sharper. However, the field of view appears narrower at approximately 70° horizontal versus Quest 3's 110°, trading immersion for the compact form factor required to achieve the 100g weight target.
3Content partnerships
Meta secured Disney+ 3D content including Marvel and Star Wars films, plus 100+ annual live sports events through ESPN, TNT and UFC. The platform will feature 8K 180° sports streams and exclusive 3D conversions of blockbusters starting 2027. Over 75 gesture-controlled games will be available at launch, alongside Xbox Cloud Gaming integration, though gaming takes a backseat to media in this product positioning.
4Camera-less smart glasses
The $349 Ray-Ban Meta Audio removes all cameras while retaining 12-hour battery life and Meta AI features. Weighing 43g, they target users who want audio functionality without privacy concerns. This model costs $100 less than the Gen 3 camera-equipped version but $100 more than Meta's Adventurer frames, creating a clear product segmentation based on camera presence and battery life tradeoffs.
5Gen 3 smart glasses upgrades
The $449 third-generation camera glasses feature improved nine-hour battery life, slimmer design, and six-microphone array that reduces 90% of background noise. New Dynamic Photos mode selects best frames from bursts, while upcoming Dolby Atmos video capture makes them the first consumer glasses with 360° spatial audio recording. The product line now includes 27 style combinations across Wayfarer, new Zena cat-eye and limited Aviator designs.
6Display glasses expansion
Meta Ray-Ban Display gains contextual navigation showing directions based on visual landmarks rather than street names. The $799 glasses expand to UK and EU markets after US launch, adding hologram calling that creates digital avatars from voice and expression analysis. Early access features include calendar management and Threads browsing directly from the lens display, though EMG wristband remains required for full functionality.
7Petal subsea cable
Meta's 7,000km transatlantic Petal cable will be the first petabit-capacity undersea link when completed in 2029. Using multi-core fiber technology, it doubles current transoceanic capacity to handle equivalent of 75% global population streaming music simultaneously. NEC builds the system with Sumitomo Electric providing fiber and Orange managing French landing, representing one of Meta's 20+ subsea cable projects.
8Pricing and availability
The VR Glasses launch Spring 2027 at $1,299 without preorder date yet. Smart glasses range from $249 Adventurer to $799 Display models, with Gen 3 available now and Audio shipping October 13. This creates a complete wearable ecosystem from entry-level camera glasses to premium VR, all integrated with Meta's AI capabilities and content partnerships across media, sports and productivity use cases.
