GUNIA: Reinventing Ukraine's Craft Traditions
A brand story that bridges traditional crafts with contemporary design
1The Birth of GUNIA
Founded in 2019, GUNIA is a brand that reinterprets Ukraine's traditional crafts through contemporary designs. Founders Natalia Kamenska and Maria Gavryliuk use their fashion industry experience to revitalize cultural heritage. What began as a research process rather than a business idea evolved into a philosophy of creating meaningful designs that honor tradition while embracing modernity.
2Gift to the Vatican
GUNIA's ceramic collection gifted to Pope Francis in 2020 boosted the brand's international recognition. The white ceramics adorned with angel and lamb motifs draw inspiration from Ukraine's everyday and religious imagery. This gift became symbolic of the country's efforts to preserve while reinventing its cultural legacy.
3Nine Traditional Techniques
GUNIA combines nine different Ukrainian craft techniques in contemporary designs: blown (guta) glass, weaving, embroidery, wood carving, ceramics, silver and bead jewelry, knitting, and basketry. Each technique is reinterpreted with its cultural context and history, making them relevant to modern lifestyles.
4The Story of GUNIA Coat
The namesake GUNIA coat is a modern interpretation of a traditional wool work garment. Woven by Natalia Kishchuk using techniques passed down from her grandmother, the coat represents the entire process from raw sheep wool to finished product. This project highlights the importance of intergenerational craft knowledge transmission.
5Network of 150 Artisans
GUNIA collaborates with over 150 craftspeople across Ukraine. Each partnership has unique dynamics - sometimes the craft technique drives the design, while other times predetermined concepts come to life through artisanal skills. This process evolves as a dialogue enriched by artisans' technical suggestions.
6Philosophy of Reinterpretation
GUNIA's core philosophy focuses on reinterpretation rather than replication of traditional techniques. While designs have cultural roots, they're presented in forms suitable for contemporary living. This approach aims to position crafts not just as hobbies or heritage, but as sustainable professional practices.
7Influence of Naive Art
GUNIA designs draw from naive art, folk symbolism and traditional iconography. The freehand-style creations challenge industrial production norms. The founders believe naive art's unfiltered, emotional expression - free from professional conventions - brings fresh perspective to today's design world.
8Cultural Continuity
The GUNIA project demonstrates how culture lives through human connections rather than objects alone. Most artisans learned their skills from family elders. Recognizing how fragile these knowledge transmission chains are, the brand builds collaborations on mutual learning and dialogue.
9Vision for the Future
GUNIA aims to pass traditional crafts to future generations while making them relevant in contemporary life. By creating professional opportunities for artisans, it helps keep cultural heritage alive. This approach offers an important model for preserving local identities in a globalized world.
