1Architectural Vision and Concept

The Preta Maria restaurant project, located in Bela Vista, Brazil, serves as a physical manifestation of Afrofuturism. Designed by Estudio Guto Requena alongside architects Gabriela de Matos and Mateus Fraga, the space intentionally rejects colonial tropes. It aims to celebrate the lived experiences of Africans in Brazil through a multidisciplinary design approach.

2Materiality and Ancestral Connection

The design composition relies on a deliberate selection of materials that bridge history and modernity. Bamboo, rammed earth, and natural stone provide a tactile connection to ancestral building traditions. These organic elements are integrated into the structure to foster a sense of affection and cultural grounding within the restaurant's primary dining environment.

3Integration of Parametric Technology

Beyond traditional materials, the project incorporates high-tech resources to achieve its unique aesthetic. Parametric design tools were utilized to shape the space, demonstrating how contemporary technology can coexist with historical narratives. This fusion of innovation and ancestry creates a dynamic environment that reflects the complexity of modern Afro-Brazilian cultural identity.

4Spatial Layout and Dimensions

The restaurant occupies a total area of 2,744 square feet, thoughtfully divided to optimize guest experience. The internal dining area spans 135 square meters, complemented by a 15-square-meter covered terrace. Additionally, a 105-square-meter garden area provides an outdoor sanctuary, ensuring the architecture remains connected to the surrounding natural environment in Bela Vista.

5Collaborative Design and Engineering

The project involved a vast team of specialists to ensure technical excellence across all disciplines. Foco Luz e Desenho managed the lighting design, while Akkerman Alcoragi Acústica handled the acoustic requirements. Structural and safety systems, including electrical, plumbing, and fire safety, were executed by i2n Engenharia, ensuring the facility meets modern operational standards.

6Landscape and Accessibility Focus

Landscape design was led by Benedito Abbud, who integrated greenery to enhance the restaurant's atmosphere. Accessibility was a core priority, with Pimenta Associados overseeing the design to ensure the space is inclusive for all patrons. These elements collectively support the project's goal of creating a welcoming, culturally resonant public space in Brazil.

7Construction and Project Management

Construction was carried out by ARBAIT, with project management provided by CTE to oversee the complex integration of various design elements. The project reached completion in 2026, showcasing a high level of coordination between architects, engineers, and specialized manufacturers. The result is a fully realized space that prioritizes both sustainability and cultural expression.

8Cultural Impact and Significance

Preta Maria stands as a significant example of how architecture can act as a vessel for cultural storytelling. By merging high-tech parametric resources with traditional building techniques, the project offers a blueprint for future hospitality designs. It highlights the potential for commercial spaces to actively participate in the preservation and evolution of heritage.
