Aurora Hotel: Where Family Heritage Meets Modern Design
Merano's Aurora Hotel bridges past and future with elegant design.
1Rebirth of a Family Legacy
The Aurora Hotel has been run by the Aukenthaler family since 1964. Third-generation owners Melanie and Philipp honor their grandmother's and mother's legacy while adding modern touches. The hotel's history dates back to 1876, with family stories embedded in every corner.
2The Architectural Balance
Architect Hannes Peer struck a perfect balance between past and future in the renovation. Instead of demolishing the existing structure, he added new layers to preserve the hotel's character. This approach blended the historical essence with contemporary design seamlessly.
3Local and Global Influences
The design combines Palm Springs modernism with Alpine rationalism. Local stones and mountain light meet inspirations from California and Brazil. This fusion creates a unique atmosphere felt in every corner of the hotel.
4Transformation of Public Spaces
The 1960s building's public areas were boldly redesigned. The ceramic mural at the entrance and Murano glass light installation defy traditional Alpine lodging expectations. These spaces highlight the hotel's modern identity.
5A Cinematic Lounge
The lounge area draws inspiration from John Lautner's Sheats-Goldstein Residence. Angular sofas, tropical plants, and a purple carpet give it a film-set vibe. The Listening Bar, with Pompeian red and smoked mirrors, deepens the atmosphere.
6Modern Comfort in Guest Rooms
The 18 new rooms reinterpret the traditional roof as a contemporary crown. Open bathrooms blend with mountain views, and Pagoda-style ceilings add drama. Materials like walnut, leather, and velvet enhance the luxurious feel.
7Vision for the Future
The second phase, set for 2028, will add 41 rooms and a rooftop pool. The Aukenthalers and Peer aim for a hotel that reflects the present while becoming future history. Aurora Hotel thus carries the family legacy forward.
