Coinbase Directs Base App Users to Hyperliquid's Perpetuals

US users currently excluded from accessing the service.

1Coinbase's Strategic Move

Coinbase has integrated Hyperliquid's perpetual futures platform into Base App to meet users' demand for leveraged trading. Self-custody users can now trade in over 290 markets including Bitcoin, Ethereum, tokenized stocks, and commodities. The platform offers leverage up to 50x while warning that positions will be liquidated if losses exceed predetermined thresholds. This integration marks a significant expansion of Base App's financial offerings.

2Market Dynamics

According to Coinbase Head of Engineering Chintan Turakhia, perpetuals are the most requested feature by power users. This demand reflects industry data showing that approximately 75% of all crypto trading volume now comes from perpetuals rather than spot trading. Hyperliquid provides the matching engine infrastructure while the user interface remains within Base App, creating a seamless trading experience.

3Geographical Restrictions

The new product is currently unavailable to users in the US, UK, and Canada. Coinbase had previously provided US institutional clients access to global crypto derivatives through its regulated subsidiary, Coinbase Financial Markets, on May 29. While options trading via Deribit is already live, perpetual futures and retail access were announced as forthcoming features in that arrangement.

4Strategic Partnership

Coinbase became Hyperliquid's official USDC treasury deployer on May 14, taking responsibility for managing the dollar liquidity supporting Hyperliquid's markets. The Base App integration adds a retail distribution layer to this existing relationship. This move demonstrates Coinbase's strategy of leveraging existing liquidity infrastructure rather than building its own perpetuals engine from scratch.

5Pivot from Social Features

Base App was relaunched last year as an 'everything app' centered around crypto-native social features like Farcaster, Zora, and creator coins. However, Coinbase's Jesse Pollak admitted in a July post that this social strategy had failed. Pollak noted that builders did drive crypto's next wave through prediction markets, perpetuals, and stablecoins, but the anticipated social aspect of the market completely collapsed.

6Technical Specifications

Coinbase has not yet disclosed full contract details for the integration beyond the leverage cap, including fee structures or a complete list of supported markets. Hyperliquid is recognized as one of the largest on-chain derivatives venues. While it handles trade execution, the user experience remains within Base App's interface, maintaining brand consistency for Coinbase users.

7User Reactions

Base App's Twitter announcement highlighted that users can now take long or short positions directly from their phones. However, some users expressed disappointment over geographical restrictions, particularly US-based investors who criticized Coinbase for not offering the service in their home market. The community response has been mixed, with excitement about new features tempered by accessibility concerns.

8Industry Implications

Coinbase's move underscores the growing importance of crypto derivatives markets. By quickly responding to user demands, the company aims to maintain a competitive edge. However, regulatory uncertainties and geographical restrictions remain significant barriers to global adoption. This development may pressure other exchanges to enhance their derivatives offerings to keep pace with evolving market expectations.
