Renewable energy hits record level in Northern Ireland

More than half of electricity now comes from renewable sources.

BBC News2 min

1Record broken

As of June 2024, 53% of Northern Ireland's electricity came from renewable sources, surpassing the previous record set in 2022. Since January 2024, renewable generation has consistently exceeded fossil fuel production. Even when including imported electricity, the renewable share matched the 50% level achieved in 2022/23.

2Wind energy leads

Wind power accounts for 74% of renewable electricity. Bioenergy (anaerobic digestion, incineration, and fermentation) contributes 18%. Solar provides 6%, landfill gas 1%, and hydro/tidal energy 1%. Northern Ireland aims to generate 80% of its electricity from renewables by 2030.

3Price stability benefits

Economy Minister Caoimhe Archibald stated that increasing renewable energy reduces price volatility and ensures more stable prices. She highlighted how rising global fossil fuel costs negatively impact businesses and low-income households. Renewables help mitigate these fluctuations.

4Path to net zero

Renewables play a crucial role in Northern Ireland's net-zero emissions target. However, grid constraints frequently lead to turbine shutdowns (dispatch down) during low demand periods. Weather conditions also affect generation levels. Infrastructure investments are key to overcoming these challenges.

5Recent trends

The 53% renewable share by June 2026 follows several years of decline. The government plans to boost renewable investments under its climate action plan. This transition is vital for energy independence and sustainability, offering both environmental and economic benefits.

6Grid challenges

Integrating renewables into the grid presents technical hurdles. Production fluctuations affect stability, evidenced by frequent turbine shutdowns in Northern Ireland. Infrastructure upgrades and energy storage solutions will be critical to addressing these issues and ensuring reliable supply.

7Global context

Northern Ireland's progress reflects the worldwide shift toward renewables. Many countries are reducing fossil fuel dependence to enhance energy security. Renewables offer both environmental and economic advantages, a trend expected to accelerate in coming years as technology improves.

8Future outlook

To reach its 2030 target, Northern Ireland needs an average annual growth of 3.4% in renewable share. Wind energy will likely remain dominant, but increasing solar and other sources' contributions is equally important. This transition promises long-term cost reductions and a more stable energy system.
