Trump imposes new tariffs on dozens of countries

US escalates global measures against forced labor products.

1New regulation in global trade

The US will impose new tariffs of 10% on 17 countries including Canada, EU, UK, and Mexico, and 12.5% on 43 countries like China, Japan, and South Korea. This decision, following a five-month investigation, aims to eliminate products made with forced labor from supply chains.

2Legal basis and scope

Implemented under Section 301 of the 1974 Trade Act, the tariffs will replace the sweeping duties struck down by the Supreme Court in February. Coinciding with the expiration of a temporary global 10% tariff, the new regulation maintains exemptions for a wide range of products like coffee and those compliant with the 2020 North American trade agreement.

3Varying rates by country

Some countries like India and Trinidad and Tobago managed to lower their tariff rates by implementing forced labor bans after the proposed tariffs were announced in June. Additional exemptions were created for products like cork from Portugal, roses from Switzerland, and gems like diamonds and rubies from various countries.

4Reactions and defense

A senior administration official stated this move is 'the most sweeping international labor rights action the US has ever taken.' The tariffs are expected to encourage stronger labor rights enforcement abroad and restore fairness in the global market for American workers.

5Ongoing investigations

The US Trade Representative's Office continues a second investigation into manufacturing overcapacity in 16 countries, which could result in higher tariffs for China, EU, Indonesia, and others. A separate Section 301 investigation into Germany's pharmaceutical pricing practices is also underway.

6Impact on global supply chains

The new tariff policy could lead to significant changes in international supply chains. Countries complying with forced labor bans may gain advantages, while non-compliant countries could see export declines. This move is considered a turning point in raising global labor standards.
