1Transformation of a Historic Home

Los Angeles-based studio Ome Dezin collaborated with Lumens to renovate a 1990s home in Hollywood Hills. Originally designed by architect Jeff Mills in a blend of mid-century modern and brutalism, the house once hosted a famous actor before becoming an art gallery. Ome Dezin founders Jesse Rudolph and Joelle Kutner worked on this blank canvas to give the home a new identity.

2Architectural Touches

While preserving the original structure, minimal changes were made including adding a gym and converting a guest room into the primary bathroom. An exterior sauna and full bathroom were added, with limestone floors in some rooms preserved. Rudolph and Kutner stated, "The space felt sterile; our goal was to add depth, layers, and warmth," summarizing their design philosophy.

3Dominance of Natural Materials

Inspired by the surrounding forest, designers used full-wall wood paneling in main living areas and bathrooms. Natural stones like veined marble were chosen for bathrooms, while the kitchen island was clad in rust-toned textured stone. Unusually tall wood baseboards throughout the home created a sense of continuity.

4Plays of Light and Shadow

Lighting was defined as functional art by Ome Dezin. Gold Ingo Maurer pendants for the kitchen were selected along with pieces from Foscarini and In Common With. Rudolph and Kutner emphasized lighting's importance: "It adds warmth, character, depth and shadows to a space." Custom stained-glass windows and doors added unique touches.

5Selection of Iconic Furniture

Furniture sourced through Lumens included iconic pieces like Frank Gehry's Wiggle Chair and Gaetano Pesce's striped Up chair. Various designs from Gubi dining chairs to foldable wooden chairs added character to different corners. Lumens CMO Dana Gers commented, "You feel each piece's individuality without anything feeling overly coordinated."

6Balance of Color and Texture

Designers created a luxurious atmosphere by balancing earthy materials with jewel tones, silver, and gold accents. Pieces like Audo Copenhagen's sheepskin chair added warmth. Custom stained glass and metal accents contrasted with natural materials.

7Ome Dezin's Signature

Ome Dezin has completed several significant projects around Los Angeles including a 1960s A Quincy Jones house and mid-century Laurel Hills residence. Collaborating with furniture designer Willet, the studio offers contemporary lifestyle solutions while respecting architectural integrity. This project maintained the home's historic fabric while meeting modern comfort needs.

8Evolution of Design

This Hollywood Hills renovation successfully demonstrates how 20th-century architecture can blend with 21st-century lifestyles. The Ome Dezin and Lumens collaboration shows how historic spaces can gain contemporary identities. The project highlights design objects' role in adding character and the power of functional art.
