PocketBook Q: The Pocket-Sized E-Reader

Phone-shaped e-reader designed for one-handed use debuts at IFA 2026.

1New Size, New Experience

PocketBook abandons traditional wide-screen designs for a 5.84-inch pocket-sized e-reader. Measuring 154 x 75.8 x 6.5 mm, the device weighs just 130 grams. It's lighter than the 2013 PocketBook Mini and one of the thinnest models the company has ever produced. The E Ink Carta 1300 display offers 788 x 1576 resolution at 300 DPI for crisp text rendering.

2Technical Specifications

PocketBook Q features a RockChip RK3566 processor, 1GB RAM, and 32GB internal storage. Its 1550mAh battery promises over a month of reading time. Storage capacity is doubled compared to PocketBook Era, providing ample space for ebooks, comics, and audiobooks. Connectivity options include dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, and USB-C with OTG support for versatile usage scenarios.

3User Experience

The phone-like form factor is optimized for one-handed use. Physical page-turn buttons on the side enable book reading without touching the screen. The Linux-based OS eliminates distractions by excluding notifications, social media feeds, or scroll-heavy apps. It focuses solely on ebooks, audiobooks, and text-to-speech functionality for a pure reading experience.

4Display and Reading Features

SMARTlight technology automatically adjusts brightness and color temperature throughout the day. Supports 25 ebook formats including EPUB, PDF, and MOBI. Adobe DRM and LCP support enable library borrowing through the pre-installed PocketBook x Libby app. IPX4 water resistance provides protection against splashes, though it's not suitable for swimming or heavy rain exposure.

5Market Positioning

PocketBook Q claims to be the first phone-shaped e-reader in the market, targeting mobile readers. Priced at €235, it positions itself in the premium segment. The device will debut at IFA 2026 in Berlin and launch in fall 2026. This innovative design could appeal to commuters and travelers who prioritize portability in their reading devices.

6Design Philosophy

PocketBook embraces a minimalist, functionality-first design approach. Physical buttons and a simple interface create a distraction-free reading experience. The text-to-speech feature with natural voices enhances accessibility for visually impaired users. The slim profile ensures easy portability in bags and pockets, making it ideal for reading on the go.

7Competitive Analysis

PocketBook Q is significantly lighter than competitors like Kindle Paperwhite (205g) and Kobo Libra 2 (215g). However, the smaller screen size might be less comfortable for extended reading sessions compared to traditional e-readers. Physical buttons and portability advantages may offset this drawback for some users. Currently, no other e-reader offers this compact form factor in the market.

8Market Potential

This innovative design could create a new segment in the e-reader market, particularly appealing to young, mobile consumers and traveling professionals. However, the €235 price point might deter some potential buyers. Market acceptance of this form factor will become clear when the device launches in fall 2026. Success could prompt other manufacturers to explore similar compact designs.
