Mastering Samsung Galaxy's customizable side button

Unlock hidden functionalities of your Samsung device's multifunctional button

1Evolution of Samsung's side button

Samsung eliminated traditional power buttons in 2019, merging functionality into a multifunctional side button. This button replaced the controversial Bixby button found on S8 through S10 series devices. The current implementation combines power functions with customizable actions, offering more flexibility than previous dedicated button designs. Modern Galaxy phones (Note 10 and later) integrate all functions into this single button.

2Default button functions

By default, the side button performs multiple actions based on press patterns: short press turns screen on/off, long press activates Bixby, double press opens camera. Combined with volume down, it offers additional functions - long press opens power menu while short press takes screenshots. Galaxy Z Flip models have context-sensitive behavior that changes when the device is folded or unfolded.

3Remapping options

Samsung provides extensive customization through Settings > Advanced Features > Side Button. Users can assign different apps or functions to double press, including Camera, Flashlight, Voice Recorder, or any chosen application. The long-press function is limited to assistant apps (Bixby, Google Gemini, ChatGPT, Claude) or power menu, maintaining some system-level restrictions for security purposes.

4Legacy device customization

Older devices with dedicated Bixby buttons (S8-S10 series, Note 8-9) have different customization paths through Settings > Advanced Features > Bixby Key. While double-press and single-press functions can be remapped, one action must remain tied to Bixby functionality. This limitation doesn't exist on newer models where Bixby isn't physically hardwired to a dedicated button.

5Modes and Routines integration

The side button works powerfully with Samsung's Modes and Routines feature. Users can create context-specific actions like activating Driving Mode, which can then trigger hands-free calling, map opening, or message auto-replies. This integration allows the physical button to serve dynamic purposes based on user activity patterns or environmental conditions.

6Quick access recording

For professionals needing instant recording access, the side button can be configured to launch Voice Recorder with a double press. This bypasses the need to unlock the phone or locate the app, enabling immediate capture of meetings or ideas. The feature maintains recording functionality even when the device is locked, prioritizing accessibility for time-sensitive situations.

7Device-specific considerations

Button behavior varies across Samsung's product lines. Foldable devices like the Z Flip series have different button logic when closed versus open. Some enterprise or carrier-locked devices may restrict certain customizations. Users should check their specific model's capabilities, as software updates occasionally introduce new button functionality options.

8Optimizing workflow efficiency

Strategic side button configuration can significantly streamline mobile workflows. By assigning frequently used apps or functions to button presses, users reduce navigation time and app hunting. The physical button's consistent location makes it reliable for muscle memory, unlike touchscreen controls that may change position across apps or screens.
