Jamiyah Home Enhances Dementia Care with New Facilities and AI

The Tampines eldercare facility integrates specialized therapy rooms and AI technology for aging residents.

1New Dementia Care Space

Jamiyah Home for the Aged has officially opened the Tangerine Room, a dedicated space designed to support residents living with dementia. The room features memory-triggering objects like vintage radios and sewing machines, alongside a calming corner. These elements aim to provide comfort and therapeutic engagement for seniors experiencing cognitive decline.

2Scaling Dementia Support Services

The facility currently houses 105 residents, with approximately one in ten diagnosed with dementia. To address this, the home is expanding its support through structured staff training programs. By partnering with Changi General Hospital, staff members are gaining specialized skills in psychogeriatric care to better assist residents with complex needs.

3Integrating AI and Technology

Beyond physical facility upgrades, the home is incorporating advanced technology to enhance resident safety. This includes the implementation of AI-assisted fall detection systems to monitor vulnerable seniors. Such technological interventions are part of a broader strategy to modernize care delivery and ensure proactive health management for the aging population.

4Addressing National Demographic Shifts

Singapore faces a significant demographic challenge, with the number of people living with dementia expected to reach 152,000 by 2030. Minister David Neo highlighted that one in four residents will be aged 65 or older by that year. Consequently, the home's mission has become increasingly critical for the local community.

5History of Darul Takrim

Established in 1996, the facility, also known as Darul Takrim, has provided shelter for destitute individuals regardless of race or religion. The home currently has the capacity to care for up to 200 residents. It serves those who are frail or lack family support, fulfilling a vital social welfare role.

6Fostering Intergenerational Connections

The home actively encourages community engagement by hosting visits from schools, companies, and grassroots organizations. Minister Neo emphasized that these interactions allow young people to teach seniors about technology while seniors share life experiences. This exchange nurtures the 'gotong-royong' spirit, strengthening social cohesion and empathy within the wider Singaporean society.

7Supporting Future Medical Talent

During the 30th-anniversary event, ten nursing and medicine students received $15,000 through the Dr Kutbuddin Medical Studies Award. This scholarship, established in 2022, honors a long-time volunteer who served the home for 50 years. It aims to inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals to pursue geriatric and community care.

8Future Strategic Care Goals

Jamiyah Home plans to deepen its expertise in gerontology through continued research and collaboration. The organization intends to introduce further dementia-centered programs and strengthen staff capabilities. By focusing on both technological innovation and human-centric care, the home aims to help residents regain independence and successfully reintegrate into the community.
