How WhatsApp is Developing Scam Alert with End-to-End Encryption

Secure scam detection with on-device machine learning.

1What is Scam Alert?

WhatsApp is developing a new feature to combat scams while protecting the privacy of users' messages. Scam Alert uses an on-device machine learning model to detect potential scam messages. This feature aims to enhance user security while maintaining end-to-end encryption.

2How Does It Work?

When Scam Alert is enabled, a machine learning model is downloaded to the device. This model analyzes incoming messages using scam patterns learned from user reports. The model processes message content entirely on-device and alerts the user if a potential scam is detected.

3User Control

Scam Alert is a user-controlled feature. Users can turn it on or off at any time. If the model flags a message as a scam, the user is shown a warning and can choose to block, report, or continue the conversation.

4False Positives

If the model mistakenly flags a message as a scam, the user can mark the chat as trusted. The warning is then removed, and Scam Alert will not flag that chat again. Users can also opt to share the last 5 messages with WhatsApp to improve the feature's accuracy.

5Privacy Safeguards

Scam Alert is designed to protect user privacy. Message content is not sent off the device, and no automatic reporting occurs. Message content is only sent to WhatsApp servers if the user explicitly chooses to report it, consistent with WhatsApp's existing user reporting system.

6Independent Verification

Scam Alert's machine learning model is designed to be independently verifiable by security researchers. Model weights are published on a public transparency ledger, allowing researchers to confirm that the model is built solely for scam detection.

7Beta Phase

Scam Alert is currently in beta and available to a limited group of users. WhatsApp is stress-testing the system with its Bug Bounty program and gathering feedback from security researchers before rolling it out to all users.

8On-Device Processing

All processing for Scam Alert occurs on-device. Message content is never sent off the device, and classification is performed entirely locally. This ensures user privacy while enabling effective scam detection.

9Differential Privacy

WhatsApp uses differential privacy techniques to measure Scam Alert's effectiveness. This approach ensures user data remains anonymous while allowing WhatsApp to evaluate the feature's performance. Only anonymous, aggregate data is sent to WhatsApp servers.

10Trusted Environments

Scam Alert's analytics processing occurs within Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs). These environments provide a secure space inaccessible to anyone, including Meta and WhatsApp, ensuring user data is protected.

11Model Updates

Scam Alert's machine learning model is continuously updated and improved. Each model update is published on a public transparency ledger and can be reviewed by independent researchers. This ensures the model remains transparent and trustworthy.

12Why It Matters

Scam Alert is an innovative feature that enhances user security while protecting message privacy. As scam tactics evolve, such technologies are crucial for safeguarding users. WhatsApp's approach could serve as a model for other platforms.
