Nigeria and Enugu State Partner to Boost Agro-Industrialisation
Government officials align on agricultural value chain expansion to enhance national food security.
1Strategic Agricultural Policy Alignment
The Federal Government and Enugu State recently convened at the 48th Regular Meeting of the National Council on Agriculture and Food Security. Officials emphasized shifting from subsistence farming to a commercially driven, agro-industrial model. This collaboration aims to strengthen value chains, improve productivity, and expand market access across the nation.
2Enugu's Ambitious Economic Targets
Governor Peter Mbah aims to grow Enugu's economy from approximately $4.4 billion to $30 billion by 2031. Agriculture is positioned as a primary driver of this growth, with projections suggesting the sector could contribute $12 billion to the total target. The state is actively integrating farmers into larger, more productive industrial enterprises.
3Scaling Production Through Infrastructure
Enugu State is implementing a 260 Farm Estates Programme to establish production hubs across all wards. To support this, the state secured 187,000 hectares through an Agricultural Land Bank and partnered with Nortra Tractors to assemble 107 tractors. These initiatives are designed to overcome historical challenges related to production scale and mechanisation.
4Revitalising Industrial Processing Hubs
The state is reactivating key industrial assets to ensure value addition remains within the local economy. Efforts include expanding the Enugu United Palm Products Limited plantation to 6,917 hectares and reviving the 10,000-hectare Enugu Songhai Farms. Additionally, the Sunrise Flour Mills has been reactivated to process local raw materials into finished goods.
5Federal Agricultural Support Interventions
Minister Abubakar Kyari reported that the National Agricultural Development Fund's input programme has reached 115,000 beneficiaries across 25 states. Furthermore, the Bank of Agriculture has financed over 500,000 smallholder farmers. The federal government is also deploying 1,500 additional tractors to enhance national mechanisation efforts and protect the incomes of rural farmers.
6Digital Registry and Data Management
Enugu State has captured 84,000 farmers in a digital registry to improve the distribution of government interventions. This data-driven approach ensures that support programmes reach the intended beneficiaries efficiently. By digitising the agricultural sector, the state government aims to monitor progress and provide targeted assistance to cooperatives and individual agribusiness entrepreneurs.
7Livestock and Value Chain Integration
The Integrated Livestock Development Centre at Ubahu represents a significant investment in the state's value chain. Designed to accommodate up to 20,000 cattle, the facility aims to centralise livestock production. This project is part of a broader strategy to connect agricultural resources with processing facilities, thereby increasing the economic value of livestock.
8National Economic Performance Context
Nigeria's economy recorded a growth rate of 4.43 per cent in the second quarter of 2026. The agricultural sector contributed 26.15 per cent to the real Gross Domestic Product, growing by 4.39 per cent during the same period. These figures underscore the sector's vital role in maintaining national economic stability and growth.
9Future Outlook for Agribusiness
The meeting concluded with a call for stronger collaboration between federal agencies, state governments, and private investors. Success depends on coordinated investments in infrastructure, processing, and market access. Enugu State remains open for partnerships, leveraging its strategic location and young population to become a leading hub for competitive, industrialised agricultural production.
