Remote Development Enhancements in JetBrains IDEs 2026.3

Streamlined remote workflows with native OpenSSH support and instant Light Mode access.

1Unified Remote Development Workflow

JetBrains IDEs in version 2026.3 integrate remote session management directly into the primary interface. Developers no longer need to rely on external tools like JetBrains Gateway or the Toolbox App to initiate connections. Remote projects now appear alongside local ones in the Home screen, identified by a distinct terminal icon for quick access.

2Native OpenSSH Integration

The update introduces native OpenSSH support, moving away from custom SSH implementations. This shift allows users to leverage existing SSH configurations, enhancing compatibility and security maintenance. By adopting a standard ecosystem, the IDE reduces the need for independent patching, while expanding the range of available authentication mechanisms and SSH-specific features for remote host connections.

3Instant Access via Light Mode

To minimize downtime during remote IDE installation, version 2026.3 introduces Light Mode. Upon connection, the IDE launches an embedded client immediately, providing essential file editing, terminal access, and search capabilities. This allows developers to begin working on their codebase while the full remote backend is still being downloaded, installed, and launched in the background.

4Seamless Transition to Smart Mode

The transition from Light Mode to full Smart Mode occurs automatically once the remote IDE is ready. All progress made during the initial Light Mode session is preserved, ensuring no work is lost or requires manual restarting. This seamless handoff maintains developer focus, allowing for uninterrupted coding sessions as the environment upgrades its capabilities.

5Enhanced Path Handling

New path-handling features correctly interpret paths starting with the tilde character as remote home directories. This improvement applies to both the full connection flow and Light Mode, preventing accidental resolution against local machine paths. Developers can now select project directories using familiar syntax, ensuring consistent behavior across different remote environments and IDE configurations.

6Simplified Connection Management

The new in-IDE Remote Development picker consolidates connections from recent history, Toolbox, OpenSSH, and IDE settings. This centralized hub facilitates faster reconnection and reuse of existing SSH setups. By streamlining the two-step dialog for new hosts, the IDE ensures that users can jump into their remote projects with a single click from the Recent Projects list.

7Platform and IDE Compatibility

In this release, Light Mode support is specifically available for Linux remote hosts. The feature set is compatible with GoLand, IntelliJ IDEA, PhpStorm, PyCharm, RubyMine, RustRover, and WebStorm. Currently, CLion and Rider are excluded from this initial Light Mode implementation, though the core remote development improvements remain accessible across the broader JetBrains IDE ecosystem.

8Strategic Shift in Development

These updates reflect a strategic move toward making remote machines feel as responsive as local environments. By eliminating external dependencies and reducing wait times through Light Mode, JetBrains aims to standardize the remote coding experience. Future releases are expected to make OpenSSH the default implementation, further cementing this integrated approach as the standard for professional development.
