1Current Apple ecosystem

Copy-pasting between Apple devices is seamless thanks to the Universal Clipboard feature. Users can select text or images on an iPhone and paste them directly to a MacBook. This flawless experience is one of the most loved features of Apple's ecosystem. Microsoft wants to offer a similar experience between Windows PCs and iPhones.

2Microsoft's request

In March, Microsoft requested a copy-paste feature between iPhones and Windows PCs from Apple. This request was submitted under the EU's Digital Markets Act developer compatibility system. Microsoft asked for apps to have persistent access to the device clipboard without requiring repeated user permissions.

3Apple's response

In its June 26 response, Apple agreed to Microsoft's request and announced a new solution. This solution will enable direct copy-paste between iPhones and Windows PCs using AccessorySetupKit. Users will only need to grant permission once to share the clipboard with paired accessories.

4Engineering effort

Apple describes developing this feature as a 'significant engineering effort.' The company plans to complete it by fall 2027, followed by beta testing. The feature will initially launch in the European Union, with other regions' release dates still undetermined.

5EU's Digital Markets Act

Apple's move is part of its efforts to comply with the EU's Digital Markets Act. The law mandates that major tech companies make their platforms more open. This will allow users to transition more easily between different ecosystems.

6Role of AccessorySetupKit

Apple's new copy-paste feature will use the AccessorySetupKit infrastructure. This infrastructure is also used to enable third-party smartwatches to receive iPhone notifications. Expanding this infrastructure will increase compatibility between different devices.

7User experience

The new feature will allow users to easily transfer text and images from iPhones to Windows PCs. This will be particularly convenient for multi-device users. Only a one-time permission will be required to use the feature.

8Industry impact

Apple's step indicates that tech giants are beginning to open their closed ecosystems. More compatibility features will give users more freedom in device choices. This development could also increase competition in the industry.
