Excel World Championship takes competition to the streets
Four contestants tested their skills at iconic landmarks worldwide.
1Excel's unconventional stage
The Microsoft Excel World Championship sent its four finalists to iconic global locations for the first time. Competitors showcased their skills outdoors near the Statue of Liberty, Big Ben, Eiffel Tower, and Sydney Harbour under challenging conditions, reflecting the rise of remote work culture.
2Last-minute victory
Champion Diarmuid Early made an impressive comeback in the final 30 minutes, defeating Andrew Ngai by just 40 points (1060-1020). This close score demonstrated the competition's intensity. Early's 'core-first, bonus-later' strategy proved successful once again.
3Challenging outdoor conditions
Contestants worked with only a camera crew and Asus-provided ExpertBook Ultra laptops. They faced variable weather, unstable internet, and curious onlookers - conditions mirroring modern professionals' daily challenges in remote work environments.
4Creative Excel puzzles
The competition featured a seven-part puzzle inspired by Jules Verne's 'Around the World in Eighty Days.' Participants solved for the fastest travel route using Excel. Past championships included unconventional tasks like jigsaw puzzles and slot machine simulations.
5ESPN broadcast and popularity
Excel competitions have run since 2021 but gained significant attention after ESPN's 2022 broadcast. Creative challenges like the Modelario platform and yacht race simulations captivated audiences, proving Excel isn't just a mundane office tool.
6Road to 2026 begins
Qualifiers for the 2026 Las Vegas World Championship are underway, with Early emerging as the current favorite. Six of nine qualifying matches are complete, with Early winning three. This unconventional competition showcases how professional skills evolve in the digital age.
