If You Loved 'Ted Lasso,' There's One Movie You Need to Watch Next
The 1986 film Hoosiers carries the same inspirational and underdog spirit as Ted Lasso.
1The Popularity of Ted Lasso
Released in mid-2020, Ted Lasso provided the joy and positivity audiences needed during the pandemic. The story of A.F.C. Richmond, a mediocre Premier League team at first, strengthened viewers' belief that 'things will get better.' Ted Lasso's sincerity and the team's quirky characters turned the show into a phenomenon.
2The Plot of Hoosiers
The 1986 film Hoosiers is inspired by a true story set in the 1950s. Gene Hackman plays Norman Dale, who takes on the coaching role for the Hickory Huskers team. The team has only seven players and very little chance of athletic success, especially after their most talented player, Jimmy Chitwood, leaves.
3Norman Dale's Coaching Style
Norman Dale has an unconventional coaching approach, much like Ted Lasso. However, unlike Ted, Norman is more gruff and impatient. Despite this, he is deeply committed to the kids he coaches and the community. Norman excels at seeing the potential in those around him, just like Ted.
4Wilbur 'Shooter' Flatch
Dennis Hopper plays Wilbur 'Shooter' Flatch, an alcoholic former basketball star. Norman hires Wilbur as an assistant coach, despite the community's rejection of him. This decision gives Wilbur a second chance at life and reveals the empathy and kindness beneath Norman's tough exterior.
5The Team's Transformation
Like the players in Ted Lasso, the Hickory Huskers initially seem like a lost cause. They resist Norman's unusual coaching techniques. However, Norman's patient and steady approach eventually pays off, leading to an incredible transformation for the team.
6The Community's View of Norman
Much like Ted Lasso, Norman Dale is initially met with skepticism by the community. Some even treat him with hostility. But Norman, through his belief in life and the people around him, manages to win both games and hearts.
7The Legacy of Hoosiers
Hoosiers tells the semi-true story of a small school achieving incredible athletic success. The film carries the same underdog energy as Ted Lasso. Both stories highlight the power of sports to bring people together and inspire.
8Why You Should Watch It
If you love the inspirational sports stories Ted Lasso offers, Hoosiers is perfect for you. The film reflects the beauty of overcoming life's and sports' challenges. You can stream Hoosiers on The Roku Channel or Kanopy, or rent it on Prime Video.
