1What is TRISO?

TRISO (tristructural isotropic) particles are a next-generation nuclear fuel for reactors. Each poppy seed-sized particle consists of enriched uranium kernels and multi-layered ceramic coatings. They offer significantly higher safety and durability compared to conventional nuclear fuels.

2Superior safety features

TRISO particles feature exceptional thermal resilience, withstanding temperatures above 2700°C thanks to their silicon carbide layer. In U.S. Department of Energy tests, none of the particles failed after 300 hours at 1600°C under radiation. These properties ensure safety even in worst-case scenarios.

3Operational flexibility

TRISO fuels can be manufactured in different forms like pellets or graphite pebbles. The tennis ball-sized graphite spheres used in X-energy's Xe-100 reactors allow continuous refueling without shutdown. This system enables real-time fuel monitoring and efficiency optimization.

4Energy efficiency

TRISO-based reactors can operate at higher temperatures than traditional light-water reactors. Using high-temperature helium or molten salt coolants improves thermal efficiency. Each Xe-100 unit generates 80MW of electricity, with up to 12 modules operable together.

5Amazon's involvement

Amazon is investing in the Cascade Energy Center project in Washington to deploy 12 Xe-100 reactors. These will power the company's data centers and cloud infrastructure with clean energy. The project involves X-energy, Energy Northwest, and Korean partners.

6The future of nuclear

TRISO technology has the potential to overcome nuclear energy's safety and efficiency challenges. It offers a sustainable solution for AI and cloud computing's growing energy demands while reducing carbon emissions. Experts consider this the most robust nuclear fuel ever developed.
