Dark Timber A&A House Reinterprets Traditional Barn Form in Polish Pine Forest
Dark timber-clad house blends seamlessly with the pine forest.
1Design in Harmony with Nature
The A&A House is set within a mature pine grove in a small town in Poland. The architects used the existing trees and natural topography as the starting point for the design. Instead of clearing the site to accommodate the building, the house was positioned around the existing woodland. This approach allowed the garden to merge naturally with the surrounding landscape.
2Reinterpreting the Traditional Barn Form
The architects drew inspiration from the silhouette of a traditional barn, reinterpreting it through a modern approach. The simple gabled volume is clad in dark timber, helping the house blend quietly into the wooded setting. Large areas of glazing bring natural light into the interiors while opening views towards the pine canopy.
3Large Picture Window Framing the Landscape
One of the defining features of the house is the large picture window at the gable end. This window frames the surrounding trees, creating a changing view throughout the day as light moves across the landscape. The main living spaces extend onto a timber terrace, where an integrated outdoor fireplace provides a year-round gathering space.
4Principle of Minimal Intervention
For the landscape design, the team at Rasztawicki Bielinski Architects followed the principle of minimal intervention. Existing trees were retained, while native planting, ornamental grasses, and informal vegetation created a soft transition between the garden and the surrounding woodland. Inside, natural timber, light plaster, and a muted material palette created warm and understated spaces.
5Open-Plan Living Area
The open-plan living area is organized around a sculptural kitchen island with softly rounded edges. Large glazed openings connect the main rooms with the landscape, keeping views of the trees present throughout the interior. At night, the character of the house changes as the dark timber facade recedes into the surrounding forest, and warm interior light becomes visible through the glazing.
6Use of Natural Materials
Throughout the project, the architecture was guided by a simple approach: preserve the character of the site, work with its existing conditions, and use a restrained palette of natural materials to create a home closely connected to its surroundings. This approach enhanced the house's harmony with the natural environment and provided an example of sustainable design.
7Day and Night Contrast
During the day, the dark timber cladding blends into the forest, while at night, the warm interior light becomes visible through the glazing. This allows the house to exhibit different characters at different times of the day. The large glazed openings maintain a strong connection between the interior and the surrounding landscape.
8Environmentally Sensitive Architecture
The A&A House serves as an example of environmentally sensitive architecture. By preserving the character of the existing woodland and using natural materials, the house blends seamlessly with its surroundings. This project highlights the importance of sustainable architecture and demonstrates how traditional forms can be reinterpreted with a modern approach.
