Bitwise Launches $9B Tokenized Stock Portfolios with Self-Custody and Auto-Rebalancing

AI and robotics-focused tokenized portfolios offer an alternative to traditional funds for global investors.

1The Rise of Tokenized Portfolios

Bitwise Asset Management has launched tokenized stock portfolios backed by $9B in assets under management. These portfolios combine Coinbase's tokenized stocks with Glider's auto-rebalancing technology. Available only to eligible non-U.S. investors, the products are designed as alternatives to traditional funds. While Bitwise creates the portfolio models, transactions are executed from users' own crypto wallets, maintaining a clear separation between design and custody.

2Three Thematic Portfolio Options

Bitwise is introducing three thematic portfolios: Mag7X ATP equally weights eight mega-caps including Apple, Microsoft and SpaceX. Robotics ATP focuses on companies in robotics and autonomous systems, while AI Leaders ATP covers artificial intelligence pioneers. The portfolios aim to provide thematic exposure before corresponding ETFs become available. The annual methodology access fee is set at 0.15%, excluding trading costs and Glider's separate fees.

3Coinbase's Tokenized Stocks

The underlying assets are Coinbase's tokenized U.S. stocks, which the exchange claims are 1:1 backed by actual shares and issued by a Coinbase entity licensed in Abu Dhabi Global Market. However, Bitwise explicitly states it hasn't independently verified Coinbase's representations regarding collateral, shareholder rights or redemption mechanisms. Currently, these tokenized stocks are only available to non-U.S. investors in supported jurisdictions.

4Self-Custody and DeFi Potential

A key differentiator from traditional funds is that ATPs keep assets in investors' own wallets. This self-custody model could enable future use of these tokens in DeFi protocols, though such applications carry significant risks like liquidation. Investors maintain full control over exit timing but are solely responsible for wallet security and transactions executed through the Glider platform. The current offering is prohibited for U.S. persons under Regulation S.

5Regulatory Framework and Limitations

Bitwise's ATPs cannot be offered to U.S. investors under the Securities Act of 1933's Regulation S. The SEC's registration of Bitwise doesn't constitute approval of these products. The innovation brings traditional portfolio construction to blockchain while keeping the underlying tokens in user wallets. This structure clearly separates portfolio design (Bitwise), execution (Glider) and custody (user wallets), creating a novel distribution of responsibilities in asset management.

6Industry Context and Recent Moves

Bitwise recently acquired staking giant Chorus One for $2.2B, expanding its presence across 30+ Proof-of-Stake chains. The firm also announced a Hyperliquid ETF targeting the $11B HYPE market. These moves align with Bitwise's strategy to bridge traditional and crypto asset management. Industry analysts predict significant growth for tokenized traditional assets, with this launch potentially accelerating institutional adoption of blockchain-based investment solutions.

7Investor Risks and Opportunities

While ATPs offer thematic exposure with greater control than traditional funds, they come with unique risks including regulatory uncertainty, technical vulnerabilities and liquidity challenges. Since Coinbase's collateral structure hasn't been independently audited, investors should exercise caution. However, if successful, this model could pave the way for broader tokenization of traditional securities on blockchain networks, potentially reshaping capital markets infrastructure.

8Transformation in Financial Services

Bitwise's ATP launch represents a significant step in merging traditional finance with blockchain technology. The self-custody model integrates decentralized finance (DeFi) principles into conventional investment products. This approach enhances transparency in asset management while strengthening investor autonomy. Financial experts suggest such hybrid models could define the future of wealth management as institutional adoption of blockchain solutions accelerates globally.
