1Budget gaming solution

With high-end handheld gaming devices costing $500-$1000, a DIYer repurposed a broken Galaxy A90 phone bought for $30 to create an affordable alternative. The phone's processor, RAM, GPU, and battery were carefully salvaged to form the core of the gaming rig. This approach demonstrates how obsolete electronics can gain new life through creative engineering.

2Controller modifications

The builder integrated a Bluetooth gaming controller by stripping it down to just the PCB, joystick, and button inputs to fit the thin enclosure. An 11.5cm keyboard was similarly modified for compactness. These modifications show the technical challenges of fitting standard components into a custom handheld form factor while maintaining functionality.

3Display integration

A salvaged 7-inch screen became the centerpiece, connected to other components via Samsung DeX using a modified USB-C hub. The hub's enclosure was removed to save space, demonstrating the maker's focus on minimalism. Voltage regulation was addressed with a charging board to bridge the gap between the 3.5V battery and 5V display requirements.

43D-printed housing

The custom enclosure was 3D-printed in stages, first for the display then for other components. This approach allowed precise fitting of salvaged parts while maintaining portability. The housing design had to accommodate wiring, ports, and battery placement, showing the iterative nature of DIY hardware projects.

5Assembly challenges

Final assembly required careful soldering of the controller, power board, and motherboard to batteries. The builder added a speaker and conducted multiple tests before securing the housing. These steps highlight the technical precision needed when combining components from different sources into a cohesive system.

6Performance limitations

While the device struggles with modern AAA titles like Tomb Raider, it handles less demanding arcade games and classics effectively. This performance profile reflects the constraints of repurposed mobile hardware compared to dedicated gaming devices, while still delivering playable results.

7Cost-effective innovation

The total project cost remained significantly below commercial alternatives by utilizing salvaged components. The builder's approach demonstrates how technical skill can transform e-waste into functional equipment, challenging the disposable nature of consumer electronics.

8DIY maker movement

This project exemplifies the growing maker culture where enthusiasts create customized tech solutions. It showcases how technical knowledge, salvaged components, and 3D printing can combine to produce unique devices that meet specific needs while avoiding premium retail prices.
