GOG Marks 18th Anniversary With Preservation Initiatives and New Publishing Arm
The DRM-free storefront celebrates its milestone by launching a showcase, new features, and classic updates.
1Eighteenth Anniversary Milestone
GOG is celebrating its 18th anniversary by hosting its first-ever digital showcase. The storefront, known for its DRM-free policy, allows users to back up files, burn discs, or play offline without launchers. This milestone highlights the platform's long-standing mission to ensure games remain playable long after original servers close down.
2Preservation Through Patrons
The GOG Patrons initiative has successfully preserved 300 classic titles by funding compatibility updates for modern operating systems. Supported by over 10,000 patrons, the program has implemented 1,700 fixes, including screen resolution adjustments and controller support. The action RPG Nox is the latest title to benefit from this dedicated technical preservation effort.
3Classic Title Revivals
The Wing Commander series is receiving an anniversary edition update, featuring both legacy and touched-up versions. GOG collaborated with modders to improve the Prophecy title, adding controller support for modern playstyles. Additionally, the violent motorbike racing classic Road Rash has been updated to ensure full compatibility with current hardware and control inputs.
4Retro Vibe Publishing
GOG has launched Retro Vibe, a publishing arm dedicated to new games that capture a classic soul. The initial lineup includes titles like the cyberpunk RPG Shardpunk 2, the boomer shooter Project Warlock: Lost Chapters, and the mysterious indie game After Hell Freezes Over, all available for users to wishlist on the site.
5Community and Social Integration
The platform is introducing GOG Social, an integrated forum allowing users to tag games directly from their library into posts. The forum features threaded replies, spoiler tags, and media support to foster community interaction. This tool aims to keep users engaged on the storefront while providing a space for detailed gaming discussions.
6Expanding Launcher Capabilities
GOG Galaxy, the launcher that consolidates libraries from various stores into one space, is expanding to Linux. This update includes new customization and personalization options for users. By unifying diverse game collections, GOG continues its effort to provide a centralized, user-friendly hub for gamers who prefer managing their titles in one place.
7Licensing and Community Requests
While GOG actively seeks to re-release classics, licensing remains a significant hurdle. The platform has expressed interest in Dune 2: Battle for Arrakis but faces complex copyright issues. Meanwhile, the community continues to vote for titles like Black & White, which currently holds 138,473 requests, alongside Silent Hill and Fable 2.
8Future of Digital Ownership
GOG’s strategy focuses on balancing modern functionality with the preservation of gaming history. By combining technical fixes for old code with new publishing ventures, the company addresses the fragility of digital media. As the platform evolves, its commitment to DRM-free access remains the core differentiator in an increasingly restrictive digital market.
