The company has significantly expanded its infrastructure, now operating over 3,000 servers across 113 countries. Recent updates include independent security audits and the integration of post-quantum encryption, reinforcing its status as a top-tier privacy provider. ## Redesigned Desktop Application Experience The Windows, Mac, and Linux applications have undergone major interface redesigns to improve navigation. Users now benefit from interactive server maps and enhanced customization options, including dark mode support. These changes maintain the app's intuitive nature while providing easier access to advanced settings, making it more accessible for both casual and power users. ## Expanded Privacy and Security Suite ExpressVPN has diversified its offerings with new tools like ExpressMailGuard for email aliasing and ExpressAI, a private chatbot. The Identity Defender service has also been upgraded with a dedicated mobile app for automated data removal and identity-theft monitoring. These features represent a strategic shift toward becoming a comprehensive, one-stop privacy and security powerhouse. ## Global Server Network Growth The server network has grown to include 113 countries, adding locations in Qatar, Nigeria, and Greenland. With over 3,000 servers available, the service provides consistent coverage, including dedicated servers in all 50 U.S. states. This extensive reach ensures that users can find reliable connection points regardless of their specific geographic requirements or performance needs. ## Advanced Connection and Routing Controls Users can now utilize more precise traffic routing through split tunneling, which supports specific IP addresses and subnets. The service also allows for automated connection rules based on network types. While these features add significant value, the notable absence of a multi-hop connection option remains a disappointment for users seeking maximum obfuscation. ## Browser Extension and Cross-Platform Support The new hybrid browser extension for Chrome and Firefox functions independently of the desktop client, protecting browser traffic directly. Mac users now enjoy the return of split tunneling on macOS 11 and newer, while Linux users benefit from a full graphical interface. This broad support ensures consistent privacy protection across diverse hardware and operating systems. ## Tiered Membership Pricing Model ExpressVPN recently introduced three distinct membership tiers: Basic, Advanced, and Pro. Pricing varies significantly based on the commitment, with 2-year plans offering the best value and four additional months free. While the monthly cost for the Basic plan remains high at $14.99, the Advanced and Pro tiers provide substantial added security features. ## Performance and Speed Benchmarks In speed testing, ExpressVPN achieved 70 percent of base download speeds and 80 percent of upload speeds. Despite a minor 1 percent drop from previous years, it remains among the top five fastest providers. The service easily handles high-bandwidth activities like streaming and gaming without noticeable buffering or lag, maintaining excellent performance consistency. ## Lightway Turbo Protocol Efficacy The proprietary Lightway Turbo protocol aims to optimize connection speeds and stability. Testing showed that while some servers experienced a 10 to 15 percent speed increase, overall averages remained comparable to other protocols. It is now the default recommendation for Windows users, offering a stable and reliable connection experience for most daily online activities. ## Streaming and Torrenting Capabilities ExpressVPN successfully unblocks major streaming platforms, including Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO Max, and Disney Plus. The entire server network supports P2P file sharing, making it an effective tool for torrenting. However, the lack of port forwarding functionality may limit the experience for power users who rely on consistent seeding for their torrent activities. ## Privacy Policy and Data Handling The service maintains a strict no-logs policy, explicitly stating that it does not record browsing history, DNS queries, IP addresses, or connection timestamps. It utilizes the open-source Lightway protocol, which has been audited by Cure53. Additionally, the ShuffleIP feature automatically rotates IP addresses during sessions to further enhance user anonymity and prevent tracking. ## Strategic Value and Market Position Despite its premium pricing, ExpressVPN justifies the cost through its robust security suite and consistent performance. The addition of identity protection and AI tools positions it as a leader in the privacy sector. For users prioritizing security and ease of use, the service remains a top recommendation despite the lack of multi-hop features. ## Sources covering this story - https://www.pcworld.com/article/395012/expressvpn-review-2.html — --- _Summary written by Brifing from the original reporting.
