Timber and metal pavilion transformed into lakeside family restaurant in China

Vari Architects designs contemporary restaurant blending architecture with nature

1Restaurant concept integrated with nature

Located in Yihe Park, Chongqing, LAGO Italian Family Kitchen reimagines an existing lakeside pavilion. Designed by Vari Architects, the restaurant establishes a strong connection with surrounding cedar trees and lake views. Named after the Italian word for 'lake', it aims to provide families with a dining experience immersed in nature. The 360 sqm project was designed to complement the urban green space character, creating harmony between built and natural environments.

2Structural framework embracing existing building

Rather than demolishing the original pavilion, the design team preserved it by wrapping it with a new structural framework. This system of steel columns, continuous beams and horizontal eaves adapts to the site's slope. The lightweight steel structure clad in Cassia timber with galvanized metal connections creates a layered relationship between old and new. This approach integrates architecture with landscape while adding spatial depth to the dining experience.

3Wave-like metal facade

Horizontal corrugated metal panels form a semi-enclosed envelope maintaining indoor-outdoor connection. The undulating profile references the adjacent lake, giving the building distinctive architectural identity. Positioned among trees, the reflective surfaces capture changing light conditions, creating visual dialogue with water and vegetation. This material choice offers both aesthetic appeal and functional benefits for a lakeside location.

4Layered spatial organization

The restaurant features a two-level layout. The ground floor opens directly to the lake, bringing natural light and views into dining areas. Glossy surfaces reflect daylight, enhancing visual continuity with the park. The upper floor offers a more intimate atmosphere with a long communal table and generous seating for family gatherings. Strategically placed windows frame landscape views while maintaining privacy, creating distinct spatial characters for different dining experiences.

5Warmth of timber materiality

Wood plays a central role in the design, consciously selected to create warm ambiance. Light-toned timber emphasizes the casual family restaurant character while harmonizing with natural surroundings. Interior wood details reference domestic interiors to evoke homely feelings. The material palette directly responds to the restaurant's function as a family-oriented space, where comfort and natural aesthetics are equally important.

6Landscape-integrated details

The restaurant extends into the landscape through a transparent lakeside corridor and steps descending to shore. Outdoor seating beneath existing cedar trees offers guests proximity to water while remaining integrated within the park. Vertical timber structure echoes the rhythm of surrounding trees, while horizontal roof planes create architectural order across the site. Every detail strengthens connection with the natural context.

7Balancing function and aesthetics

The project achieves balance between lightweight metal cladding and timber structure while meeting functional requirements. The semi-permeable envelope allows air flow and natural light while maintaining sheltered feel. This blurring of indoor-outdoor boundaries reflects an increasingly important design strategy for contemporary hospitality spaces. Material selections were optimized for both durability and visual appeal in lakeside conditions.

8Architecture meeting social use

LAGO Italian Family Kitchen exemplifies how architecture can integrate with daily social interactions. Through its layered timber structure, lightweight metal enclosure and careful relationship with landscape, it harmonizes nature, architecture and human use. This design inspires creation of sustainable, inviting public spaces in urban green areas. The restaurant highlights the need for nature-connected architecture in China's rapidly developing cities.
