Bather's Cabin features moss-covered rooftop sauna in woodland setting

Architectural retreat blends bathing rituals with sustainable material choices

1Architectural Concept

Built Works designed Bather's Cabin as a dedicated bathing retreat nestled in East Sussex woodland. The 2023 project features a planted roof terrace with sauna, hot tub and ice bath. The studio aimed to create a space entirely devoted to bathing rituals while blending with the natural surroundings. The tiered facade references local 1960s granaries, softening the building's silhouette against the landscape.

2Material Selection

The cabin showcases locally sourced materials including blackened larch cladding treated with pine tar. UK-grown hemp provides insulation, while bathroom tiles were handmade by the architects featuring children's fingerprints. Furniture was crafted from cedar blocks to match the geometric form. An inlaid oak floor was hand-cut on site, emphasizing the project's artisanal approach to materiality.

3Site Integration

Positioned at a stream's edge, guests arrive at roof level before descending inside. The moss-covered rooftop uses vegetation transplanted from the building plot, creating continuity with the forest floor. The raised boardwalk allows movement through planting while maintaining immersion. Built Works strategically placed the terrace to align with the bank's topography, creating dynamic level changes.

4Spatial Organization

The cross-shaped plan frames views in all directions while organizing functions around a central point. Minimal doors maximize openness, with curtains providing flexible privacy divisions. This layout creates fluid transitions between bathing, relaxation and sleeping areas. The design prioritizes connection to nature through carefully oriented sightlines.

5Sustainable Approach

The project emphasizes minimal processing of regional materials to reduce environmental impact. Relocated mosses and ferns maintain local biodiversity on the rooftop. Handmade elements like block-printed curtains reduce manufacturing waste. The studio preserved existing site features while introducing new structures sympathetic to the woodland context.

6Architectural References

The cabin's stepped form draws from traditional grain stores in the area, blending vernacular inspiration with contemporary bathing functions. The monolithic presence is softened by tiered cladding that helps the structure merge with surroundings. At night, the building's outline becomes intentionally indistinct within the forest setting.

7Design Details

Custom elements include bathroom tiles imprinted with flowers by the architect's family. The curtains feature screen-printed floor plans, while cedar furniture echoes the building's geometry. Pine tar treatment protects exterior wood while achieving a uniform blackened appearance. These thoughtful details create cohesion between architecture and interior elements.

8Contextual Significance

As part of Architects Holiday retreats at Great Park Farm, Bather's Cabin joins other nature-immersive structures like Yogi's Cabin. The project demonstrates how specialized hospitality spaces can achieve architectural distinction through material honesty and site responsiveness. It represents growing demand for experiential, sustainable retreats that reconnect visitors with natural rhythms.
