When I first watched Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey in standard 35mm format, I noticed that some scenes felt slightly off visually. While impressive, something seemed missing. Watching it a second time in IMAX made the difference clear: IMAX fully captures the film's visual details and sense of scale.
2The power of 70mm film
The Odyssey is the first feature film shot entirely with 70mm IMAX cameras. This format offers a much wider image area compared to traditional 35mm. Particularly in scenes featuring colossal creatures and epic moments, the additional visual information IMAX provides delivers a far more immersive experience.
3The Cyclops scene difference
In the 35mm version, you understand how much larger Cyclops Polyphemus is compared to humans. But in IMAX, you can even see subtle details like the creature hunching to avoid hitting the cave ceiling. This makes the actor's physical performance and the character's size feel much more tangible.
4The threat of Scylla
The sea monster Scylla's scene is also far more impactful in IMAX. The standard version shows the creature's size, but IMAX reveals how it manages to snatch victims unnoticed. Seeing the monster lurking in the cliffs above adds an extra layer of tension to the scene.
5The scarcity of 70mm projection
Unfortunately, only about 40 cinemas worldwide can project 70mm IMAX. This means most viewers won't experience the film as Nolan intended. IMAX's CEO noted they've focused on retrofitting old projectors rather than building new ones, as theaters are reluctant to construct the screens needed for 70mm.
6The future of the format
With The Odyssey, Nolan aims to show that 70mm is still relevant and that audiences demand this experience. However, the industry continues to use the format's scarcity as a marketing tool. Without Nolan's star power, a film with such limited screenings might not have achieved this level of success.
