GitHub Copilot SDK for Java AI Integration
Framework-agnostic AI now available for Java developers
1Framework-Agnostic AI Solution
GitHub Copilot SDK for Java provides framework-independent AI integration. Unlike solutions like Langchain4j and Spring AI, it doesn't require dependency on any specific framework. Works with JDK 17 or 25, Maven 3.9+ and GitHub account. BYOK (Bring Your Own Key) support enables usage with providers like OpenAI, Azure, Anthropic. No Copilot subscription required for basic functionality.
2Java Ecosystem Compatibility
The SDK supports familiar Java constructs including CompletableFuture, annotations, lambda expressions and virtual threads. Works seamlessly with popular frameworks like Jakarta EE 11 and Spring. Enables programmatic management of AI agent sessions, tool registration and structured responses in server-side Java applications. Designed to feel natural for enterprise Java developers.
3Sample App: Real Estate Management
The Jakarta EE 11 sample application demonstrates an AI pipeline for real estate lead management. Users can submit queries like '3-bed house under £800k in London'. The system creates isolated Copilot Agents on virtual threads for each query. Real-time status updates via Jakarta WebSocket. Works with 10 sample property listings in H2 in-memory database.
4@CopilotTool Annotation
The SDK's core API, @CopilotTool, provides an experience similar to writing JAX-RS endpoints. Methods can be declared as tools callable by AI. @CopilotToolParam adds parameter descriptions. The SDK automatically handles JSON Schema generation, argument parsing and dispatch. Developers only need to write normal Java methods while the framework handles the AI integration.
5Experimental Features Setup
The annotation-based tool API is currently an experimental feature. Requires -Acopilot.experimental.allowed=true flag in Maven build. SDK must be added as annotationProcessorPath in maven-compiler-plugin configuration. Generates $$CopilotToolMeta classes at compile time. ToolDefinition.fromObject() registers all annotated tools from an object.
6Lambda Tool Definitions
Tools can be defined inline using lambda style without dedicated methods. ToolDefinition.from() creates tools at call site. Ideal for small, single-use functions. Improves code readability. The sample app's report_intent tool demonstrates this approach. Enables rapid prototyping with flexible tool creation.
7Maven Dependency
SDK available as Maven dependency: groupId com.github, artifactId copilot-sdk-java, version 1.0.7-preview.1. Sample app built on Open Liberty 26.0.0.5, Jakarta EE 11 (Faces 4.1, CDI 4.1), PrimeFaces 15.0.16 and H2 database. Code can be cloned from GitHub and run with mvn clean package liberty:run, accessible at localhost:9080.
8Concurrent Agent Management
The application can process multiple inquiries simultaneously. Creates isolated Copilot Agents on separate virtual threads for each query. Real-time status updates to browser via Jakarta WebSocket. Agents progress through phases like VALIDATING, SEARCHING, WRITING_REPORT. All processes can be monitored concurrently through the UI.
9Modern Java Features
SDK fully supports modern Java features. Virtual threads enable high concurrency. CompletableFuture manages asynchronous operations. Integrates with lambda expressions and functional programming approaches. Compatible with new Java features like record classes and sealed interfaces. Provides familiar experience for Java developers.
10Importance of Open Standards
SDK's integration with Jakarta EE 11 highlights value of open standards. Sample app developed by Jakarta EE 11 lead release coordinator demonstrates how open standards empower developers. Uses specifications like Faces 4.1, CDI 4.1, WebSocket 2.2. Reduces vendor lock-in risk and ensures long-term sustainability.
11Future Impact
GitHub Copilot SDK for Java democratizes AI usage in enterprise applications. Framework-agnostic approach enables broad adoption. Likely to see rapid uptake in finance, healthcare and e-commerce sectors. Potential to set new standard for AI integration in Java ecosystem. Could significantly boost developer productivity while optimizing organizational AI investments.
