Hyundai Invests ₹4,000 Crore to Expand Pune Manufacturing Capacity
Hyundai targets 3.2 lakh annual units in Pune to regain Indian market share.
1Strategic Pune Expansion
Hyundai Motor India is committing an additional ₹4,000 crore to its Pune facility by 2030. This investment aims to nearly double annual production capacity to 3.2 lakh units. The plant, which already received ₹7,000 crore in initial funding, serves as a critical hub for the company's long-term growth strategy within India.
2Broader Investment Context
This project is part of a massive $15.5 billion investment strategy announced by Hyundai Motor Group for India through 2032. The Pune expansion specifically leverages local vendor support, with 55 suppliers already contributing ₹4,600 crore to the regional ecosystem. These efforts have collectively generated over 18,000 employment opportunities across the state.
3Localisation and Efficiency
Hyundai intends to increase vehicle localisation levels from 83% to 92% to strengthen its domestic supply chain. The Pune plant integrates Industry 4.0 technologies and AI-enabled production systems to ensure high-quality output. By localising battery packs and power electronics, the company aims to reduce dependency on imports and enhance operational cost efficiency.
4Market Share Recovery
After slipping to fourth place in India's passenger vehicle sales, Hyundai plans to launch 26 new models to reclaim its position. The company is diversifying its portfolio to include internal combustion engines, hybrids, and electric vehicles. This multi-pronged approach is designed to cater to evolving consumer preferences in the competitive Indian market.
5Electric Vehicle Roadmap
Hyundai is aggressively investing in the Indian electric vehicle ecosystem to support its goal of introducing four new EV models by 2029. Beyond vehicle production, the company is funding the development of necessary charging infrastructure. This commitment aligns with their broader target of making 50 percent of their total portfolio sustainable by 2030.
6Export Milestone Achievement
Celebrating 30 years in India, Hyundai reached a landmark of 4 million cumulative passenger vehicle exports since 1999. As the country's largest exporter, the company views India as a global manufacturing hub. This export success reinforces the competitiveness of Indian-made vehicles within the broader Hyundai Motor Group global operations and supply network.
7Advanced Facility Capabilities
The Pune plant features a highly flexible production system capable of handling multiple vehicle models simultaneously. It includes an advanced engine shop producing 150,000 units annually to support domestic demand. Combined with existing Chennai operations, Hyundai’s total annual manufacturing capacity in India is projected to reach 1.14 million units by the year 2030.
8Future Growth Implications
The inauguration of the Pune facility underscores India's strategic importance to Hyundai's worldwide expansion. By focusing on innovation, electrification, and skill development, the company is positioning itself for sustained growth. These investments are expected to solidify Maharashtra's role as a premier automotive manufacturing hub while driving significant economic development in the region.
