Modern Wooden House Design in Heenvliet
Studio Brandvries' minimalist home project preserving historic context
1Project Location and Historical Context
The Woonhuis Heenvliet project is situated on the edge of the historic village of Heenvliet in the Netherlands. When the plot was acquired, it contained a partial house built on the footprint of what was once part of a historic barn complex. Studio Brandvries aimed to preserve this architectural heritage while transforming the existing structure into a contemporary living space.
2Architectural Approach and Material Selection
Spanning 280 square meters, the project stands out with its minimalist design language and use of natural materials. Lead architects Sander Brand and Tijs Niessen chose wood as the primary construction material, creating a warm yet modern atmosphere. Strategic glass elements invite natural light while strengthening the indoor-outdoor connection.
3Structural Transformation and Functionality
The renovation preserved the original footprint while enhancing the space's functionality. Contractor KVG Huizen in Hout combined the building's characteristic features with modern comfort standards during construction. This approach resulted in both aesthetic appeal and practical solutions for contemporary living requirements.
4Spatial Organization
The design balances open-plan living areas with private zones requiring more intimacy. Bedrooms and service areas are positioned for privacy, while common living spaces connect to the outdoors through expansive glazing. This thoughtful layout creates an ideal environment for family life and social interaction.
5Harmony with Surroundings
The architecture was developed to complement the rural landscape. Low-profile roof lines and natural wooden facades integrate the structure with its environment. This approach achieves visual coherence while demonstrating ecological sensitivity through contextual design solutions.
6Play of Light and Shadow
Photographs by Martijn Vonck capture the building's dynamic interaction with sunlight. Changing shadow patterns throughout the day animate the minimalist surfaces. Large glass openings ensure interior spaces benefit from natural illumination from dawn till dusk.
7Material Details and Craftsmanship
The wood materials serve both structural and decorative purposes throughout the project. Natural wood textures combine with modern detailing to create a timeless aesthetic. Minimalist framing systems for glass partitions maximize transparency and visual connections.
8Modern Interpretation of Historic Fabric
Studio Brandvries' project demonstrates how contemporary living standards can be achieved within historic contexts. The preservation of existing structural elements combined with modern additions provides an exemplary case of sustainable architectural heritage. Completed in 2024, the project contributes meaningfully to Heenvliet's architectural landscape.
