1What is App Functions API?

Google's new App Functions API transforms your Android apps into data providers for AI assistants. This technology allows AIs like Gemini to fetch personalized data directly from your app instead of generic web searches. For example, a game app can provide recommendations based on user preferences. The API is currently in private preview with trusted testers.

2Preparation for Integration

To test App Functions API, you need a device running Android 16 or higher with the Baklava-coded 36.0 system image. Developer options and USB debugging must be enabled. By installing ADB (Android Debug Bridge), you can list all app functions registered on your device. This is the first step to verify proper integration.

3Listing Functions

Use the terminal command 'adb shell cmd app_function list-app-functions' to see all app functions on your device. You can filter functions for your specific app using grep. For example, search with package name like 'dev.katiebarnett.gamenightguru' to list only relevant functions. Remember that function definitions are publicly visible.

4Test Agent Setup

Google provides a privileged Test Agent app that replaces Gemini. To use it, download source code from App Functions GitHub repo. Navigate to the agent directory in terminal and run './run_privileged.sh --build' to compile and install the agent on your device. Windows users must use Git Bash or WSL.

5Using the Test Agent

After installing the Test Agent, you can view app functions from the dropdown menu. You can test functions by entering parameters and checking returned results, or execute data update functions. At this stage, AI isn't involved yet - only basic function testing occurs.

6Getting Gemini API Key

To run the Test Agent with AI, you need a free Gemini API key. Visit Google AI Studio API Keys page and sign in with your Google account. Click 'Create API key' at top right to generate a new key. Copy the key and paste it into the Test Agent's settings page.

7Live Test Scenario

When you send a natural language query like 'I have 4 friends coming over for 2 hours and we love strategy games. What should we play?' to the Test Agent, the AI automatically discovers your app's queryGames function. It maps parameters and fetches the correct game recommendation from database. The entire process takes less than 30 seconds.

8Importance for Mobile Developers

App Functions API gives mobile developers competitive advantage in AI era. You can offer rich interactions with AI assistants while protecting users' personal data. Expected to launch publicly in second half of 2026, this technology has potential to fundamentally transform mobile experiences.
