1Strategic Investment Focus

TVS Capital Funds is prioritizing deeptech and manufacturing sectors for its fourth fund. The firm plans at least six investments in areas like AI infrastructure, defence, space, and aviation. Managing partner Krishna Ramachandran emphasizes that target companies must own proprietary intellectual property rather than relying on basic computer-controlled manufacturing units.

2Government RDI Fund Support

TVS Capital is among 14 fund managers selected by the Research, Development, and Innovation Fund. This government-backed initiative supports frontier sectors critical to national sovereignty. While the firm requested a 200 crore commitment for its 4,000 crore fund, formal confirmation regarding the exact allocation from the RDI Fund remains pending.

3Rigorous Selection Criteria

The firm applies a strict two-tier filter for potential investments. Businesses must be India-domiciled and demonstrate multi-decade relevance rather than short-term trends. Additionally, founders undergo a proprietary AAA assessment process. This approach ensures that capital is deployed into sustainable entities capable of long-term growth within the evolving Indian industrial landscape.

4Recent Market Activity

TCF has already completed four investments from its fourth fund. These include the AI cloud provider Neysa, fintech startup Finnable, non-banking financial company Saarathi Finance Credit, and wealth manager Neo Wealth. The investment in Neo Wealth, valued at over 1 billion dollars, highlights the firm's active deployment strategy across diverse financial segments.

5Capital Deployment Strategy

The firm has raised 4,000 crore for Fund IV but expects to deploy approximately 5,000 crore through co-investments alongside limited partners. TCF is prepared to write cheques between 300 and 500 crore for high-potential businesses. This scale allows the firm to maintain significant influence while supporting capital-intensive deeptech and manufacturing projects.

6Caution Amid AI Hype

Despite optimism, TCF remains cautious regarding inflated valuations, particularly within the AI sector. Ramachandran notes that growth-stage investors face different risks than venture capitalists due to longer holding periods of six to seven years. The firm prefers to enter markets once hype cools to avoid overpaying for assets during speculative cycles.

7Historical Fund Performance

TVS Capital has a long history of fund management starting with its 2008 maiden fund, which had a 585 crore corpus. Subsequent funds have shown consistent growth, with the third fund securing 1,937 crore in commitments. This trajectory reflects the firm's evolution from early growth stages to managing larger, more complex industrial portfolios.

8Long-term Market Outlook

The firm’s strategy reflects a broader shift toward backing sovereign-critical technologies. By focusing on electronic components and proprietary IP, TCF aims to build resilient businesses that withstand market volatility. Their disciplined approach to valuation and founder assessment serves as a risk management mechanism for the next decade of Indian industrial development.
