Tech Mahindra Outperforms Wipro in September Quarter Financial Results
Tech Mahindra leverages telecom deals while Wipro faces consecutive revenue declines amid sector challenges.
1Divergent Quarterly Performance
Tech Mahindra reported its fastest second-quarter growth in three years, reaching $1.69 billion in revenue, a 1.99% sequential increase. Conversely, Wipro experienced its first second-quarter revenue decline in three years, falling 0.1% to $2.61 billion. These results highlight a significant divergence in performance between the two major Indian IT services firms.
2Telecom Deal Impact
Tech Mahindra’s growth was primarily driven by its telecom vertical, which accounts for one-third of its business. A major contract with the French telecom company Orange significantly bolstered its quarterly figures. In contrast, Wipro struggled as its media, technology, and healthcare segments weakened, impacting nearly one-third of its total business operations.
3Leadership and Strategy Shifts
The performance gap reflects the strategic focus of new leadership. Mohit Joshi, who became CEO of Tech Mahindra in December 2023, is emphasizing legacy technology modernization. Srini Pallia, Wipro’s CEO since April 2024, faces client-specific issues and slow growth in healthcare, while maintaining a cautious guidance range of -1.5% to -0.5%.
4Operational Efficiency and Margins
Tech Mahindra reported an operating margin of 14.8%, a 40 basis point improvement driven by volume growth. Wipro achieved a 16.5% operating margin, rising 50 basis points due to operational improvements and rupee depreciation. Despite lower margins, Tech Mahindra’s net profit rose 7.6% to $166 million, while Wipro’s net income fell 4.7%.
5Workforce and Hiring Trends
The companies are pursuing different human capital strategies. Wipro reduced its headcount by 6,716 employees, bringing the total to 236,328. Meanwhile, Tech Mahindra expanded its workforce by 5,446, reaching 152,206 staff members. Tech Mahindra plans to increase fresher hiring based on demand, whereas Wipro is selectively returning to campus recruiting for specialized roles.
6Macroeconomic Demand Environment
Both firms operate within an uncertain demand environment characterized by clients holding back discretionary spending due to macroeconomic instability. Automation tools are forcing IT firms to pass cost savings to clients, potentially cannibalizing revenue. Competitors like TCS and HCLTech also report that non-essential client spending remains under scrutiny across the industry.
7Future Outlook and Guidance
Wipro’s large-deal order book, covering contracts worth $30 million or more, dropped to $674 million, the lowest level in four years. Management attributed this to unsigned deals expected to close soon. Tech Mahindra remains optimistic, requiring a significant sequential decline of over 10% in the next quarter to miss its previous year’s revenue.
8Market and Analyst Reception
Both companies exceeded analyst revenue estimates, with Bloomberg-polled experts expecting $2.59 billion for Wipro and $1.66 billion for Tech Mahindra. Despite the revenue decline, Wipro’s shares on the New York Stock Exchange jumped 3.9%. Analysts suggest Tech Mahindra is successfully executing its turnaround, while Wipro continues to face challenges from vendor consolidation.
