Indian Bank Stocks Surge: Nifty Bank Index Gains 560 Points
Shares of major banks like HDFC Bank and SBI rose by up to 2%.
1Surge in Bank Stocks
Shares of major banks such as HDFC Bank, State Bank of India (SBI), and IndusInd Bank rose by up to 2% on Wednesday. This increase pushed the Nifty Bank index up by 1% to 58,023 points. Financial stocks led the gains on Dalal Street.
2Leading Gainers
State Bank of India (SBI) shares led the gains with a 2% increase, while Union Bank of India, Punjab National Bank (PNB), Canara Bank, and HDFC Bank shares also rose by over 1%. IDFC First Bank, ICICI Bank, and AU Small Finance Bank shares gained nearly 1%.
3Improvement in Financial Sector
Siddhartha Khemka, head of research at Motilal Financial Services, stated that improving balance sheets, better liquidity conditions, stable interest rates, and moderating credit costs would support stronger growth in the financial sector. These factors could mark the beginning of a broad-based earnings upside.
4Q1 Earnings Expectations
The sharp rise in Indian bank stocks came ahead of the critical Q1 earnings announcements scheduled for Saturday. Major private banks like HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, ICICI Bank, and Yes Bank are set to announce their April-June quarter results for the FY27 financial year.
5Nomura's Analysis
Nomura expects the banks under its coverage to report modest core-PPOP growth, driven by soft NII growth and controlled operational expenses. ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, and Kotak Mahindra Bank are among Nomura's top picks.
6Technical Outlook and Expectations
Vatsal Bhuva, Technical Analyst at LKP Securities, expects the Nifty Bank index to find support in the 56,800–56,900 zone, with immediate resistance around 58,200. Bajaj Broking noted that 58,700 is a near-term hurdle, and a decisive close above this level could trigger the next rally.
