Google Play introduces new standards to elevate app quality
Memory usage to be reduced and device migrations simplified
1New memory usage standards
Google Play is setting new performance thresholds for app developers. Standards are being introduced in dynamic memory usage, bitmap usage, and DEX code optimization. When these thresholds are exceeded, app performance may degrade and system-wide slowdowns can occur. These standards are particularly crucial as hardware constraints increase in today's environment.
2Dynamic memory usage measurement
The new system will measure the memory used by apps for private data storage (anonymous RSS + swap). This measurement will be taken across different app states (foreground, background) and device performance categories. Elements like file storage won't be included in this measurement. Developers will be able to pinpoint exactly where memory bloat occurs.
3Limitations on bitmap usage
Bitmaps will be allowed to use memory when the app is in the foreground but will be prevented from being held in memory for extended periods in background or cached states. This will prevent unnecessary memory usage. Google will make it mandatory for apps to meet these new bitmap standards. Apps that exceed the standards may face visibility loss on the Play Store.
4DEX code optimization requirement
Apps published on Google Play will need to have their DEX codes optimized by at least 25%. Optimization, shrinking, and obfuscation processes using tools like R8 will make apps consume less memory. Optimized apps will launch faster, reduce ANRs, and improve performance. Developers will see detailed optimization information for each new bundle they upload to Play Console.
5New analysis tools
Google will provide developers with new memory metrics and analysis tools. Dynamic memory usage and bitmap usage can be tracked through Android vitals. Detailed analysis can be performed across percentiles and RAM groups. Additionally, new filters will be added for apps terminated due to excessive memory pressure on the device. Developers will see performance alerts directly in Android vitals.
6Zero-tap sign-in for device migrations
When users switch to a new Android device, they'll be able to automatically sign in to their apps. The Android Restore Credentials API will securely transfer users' sign-in states. This feature will apply to all apps supporting both mandatory and optional sign-in. Users will be instantly recognized and signed in when they first open the app on their new device.
7App visibility will be affected
Starting February 2027, apps that don't meet the new memory standards may face visibility loss on Google Play. Additionally, their publishing capabilities may be restricted. Similar to existing Android vitals metrics, Google will consider threshold exceedances as indicators of poor user experience. The standards will be updated over time based on ecosystem needs.
8Crucial step for Android ecosystem
These new standards are critical for maintaining the health of the Android ecosystem and improving user experience. Optimizing app memory usage during increasing hardware constraints will boost system-wide performance. Moreover, seamless device migration experiences will increase user satisfaction. Google's move will set a new standard in mobile app quality.
