1Historic Speed Milestone Achieved

The BYD Yangwang U9 Xtreme has officially become the world's fastest production car. On November 1, 2026, the electric hypercar reached a top speed of 503.17 kph on the E11 road in Abu Dhabi. This achievement marks the first time any production vehicle has surpassed the 500 kph speed barrier.

2Rigorous Testing and Adjustments

German racing driver Marc Basseng piloted the vehicle across a 10-kilometer stretch in the Al Dhafra Region. After initial runs on October 31 reached 490 kph, engineers fine-tuned aerodynamics, suspension settings, and tire pressures. These overnight modifications were critical in enabling the car to hit the record-breaking 503.17 kph speed.

3Official Record Recognition

Both the FIA and Guinness World Records have officially certified the performance. The U9 Xtreme now holds titles for the highest speed by a production car and an electric production car. Notably, the record was set during a single-direction run, a methodology that differs from traditional two-way average speed testing.

4Advanced Electric Powertrain

The hypercar utilizes a quad-motor system integrated with a 1,200-volt platform. It features a high-performance LFP Blade Battery capable of a 30C discharge rate. This powertrain delivers over 2,977 horsepower, supported by the e4 independent torque-vectoring platform and the DiSus-X Intelligent Body Control System to maintain stability at extreme velocities.

5Engineering for Extreme Stability

To handle speeds exceeding 300 mph, the vehicle is equipped with bespoke semi-slick GitiSport e-GTR2 Pro tires featuring rim-interface knurling to prevent slippage. Stopping power is provided by titanium calipers paired with carbon-ceramic rotors. These components ensure the vehicle remains controllable and safe while operating at the absolute limit of performance.

6Public Road Testing Challenges

Driver Marc Basseng emphasized that testing on a public road like the E11 presents unique challenges compared to a closed circuit. Precision, vehicle stability, and driver confidence are significantly more demanding in this environment. The successful run highlights the capability of the Yangwang engineering team to adapt to varied conditions.

7Abu Dhabi as Innovation Hub

The event was highlighted during a meeting between Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and BYD executive Stella Li. The successful test underscores Abu Dhabi's advanced infrastructure and regulatory capacity to host high-level automotive trials, reinforcing the emirate's position as a global center for testing future mobility technologies.

8Future Production Implications

BYD plans to manufacture only 30 units of the U9 Xtreme, the most powerful version of its supercar lineup. With testing now complete, customer production is officially underway. While the single-direction record may invite scrutiny from rivals, the feat demonstrates the rapid evolution of electric vehicle performance and battery discharge capabilities.
