1Historic Frankfurt Location Chosen

The new Jewish Academy is strategically located in Frankfurt, a city with deep roots in Jewish intellectual history. Situated near the city's largest synagogue, the site sits within view of the historic festival hall where Nazis deported Jewish citizens in 1938. This location serves as a poignant reminder of past tragedies.

2Legacy of the Lehrhaus

The academy draws inspiration from the historic Jewish Lehrhaus, a renowned house of study founded in 1920 and associated with philosopher Franz Rosenzweig. Closed by the Nazis in 1938, the new institution seeks to revive this tradition of intellectual inquiry, positioning itself as a modern successor to that significant cultural legacy.

3Combating Hatred Through Knowledge

Josef Schuster, president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, emphasized that education is the primary tool to combat rising antisemitism. During the opening ceremony, he described the academy as a milestone for the community, highlighting the urgent need to address threats against Jewish life in contemporary German society today.

4Architecture Blends Eras

The building design integrates a 110-year-old turn-of-the-century villa with a four-story modern structure. This architectural fusion symbolizes the connection between history and modernity. By housing traditional features alongside contemporary spaces, the facility aims to provide a physical environment where the past, present, and future are explored in equal measure.

5Diverse Academic Program Focus

Directors Sabena Donath and Doron Kiesel intend for the academy to serve as a bridge between academia and the public. The curriculum will focus on the philosophy of religion, ethics, and contemporary debates. The goal is to showcase the heterogeneity of Jewish life, moving beyond monolithic definitions of Jewish identity.

6Broadening Public Discourse

While the academy will address antisemitism, leadership hopes to expand public discourse to include broader Jewish themes. By facilitating interfaith dialogue and academic study, the institution aims to normalize discussions about Jewish culture and thought, ensuring that Jewish identity is not solely defined by historical persecution or current security challenges.

7Security as Bitter Reality

A mezuzah is affixed to the entrance, yet the building also incorporates extensive security measures. Director Sabena Donath noted that guarding Jewish institutions remains a sad, necessary reality of everyday life in Germany. These protective features were a significant factor in the project's final construction costs, which exceeded initial 2021 estimates.

8Funding and Institutional Growth

The project cost approximately €40 million, with funding split equally between the Central Council of Jews and federal and state governments. Originating from a 2012 initiative by former head Dieter Graumann, the academy now stands as a permanent center for dialogue, research, and the preservation of Jewish intellectual heritage in Germany.
