Tamilnad Mercantile Bank Seeks RBI Approval Amid Expansion and Legal Challenges
TMB targets aggressive growth while navigating legacy regulatory disputes and strong quarterly financial performance.
1Regulatory Hurdles and Compliance
Tamilnad Mercantile Bank is actively seeking Reserve Bank of India approval to regularize past share transfers. These efforts occur alongside pending Enforcement Directorate proceedings regarding historical bonus share issuances. CEO Salee S. Nair confirmed the bank's commitment to complying with all regulatory conditions imposed by the central bank to resolve these ongoing legal matters.
2Strong Quarterly Financial Performance
The lender reported a record quarterly net profit of ₹451.14 crore for the September period, marking a significant 42% year-on-year increase. Net interest income climbed 35% to reach ₹807.17 crore. These robust figures underscore the bank's operational efficiency, supported by a notable improvement in the cost-to-income ratio, which dropped to 38.28% from 43.81%.
3Asset Quality and Risk Management
Gross non-performing assets improved significantly, falling to 0.61% of gross advances from 1.01% in the previous year. Net non-performing assets also declined to 0.14%. The bank maintains a capital adequacy ratio of 32.39%, providing a strong buffer as it manages its expanding balance sheet and navigates potential risks within its diverse loan portfolio.
4Gold Loan Portfolio Dynamics
Gold loans currently represent 48.24% of the bank's total advances, totaling ₹29,280 crore. While growth has been strong, the bank anticipates a deceleration as the impact of rising gold prices moderates. Management monitors the loan-to-value ratio daily, ensuring that even a 25% decline in gold prices remains manageable within their established risk framework.
5Strategic Branch Network Expansion
TMB plans to open approximately 60 new branches during FY27, with at least 20 locations situated outside its home state of Tamil Nadu. This expansion strategy targets key markets including Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Kerala. The bank aims to broaden its regional footprint beyond its traditional base to capture new customer segments and drive growth.
6Deposit Mobilization and Funding
The bank is aggressively scaling its deposit franchise, with total business growing 27.25% to reach ₹1.3 trillion. While term deposits grew by 29%, the bank is also exploring ways to increase foreign currency non-resident deposits. Management is considering the establishment of liaison offices abroad to further support stable funding for its expanding loan book.
7Revised Growth Guidance Targets
Reflecting confidence in its operational trajectory, TMB has raised its FY27 growth guidance. The target for advances growth is now set above 22%, up from the previous 21% estimate. Similarly, deposit growth guidance has been increased to over 20% from 18%, signaling a positive outlook for the bank's retail, agriculture, and MSME lending segments.
8Management Stability and Outlook
CEO Salee S. Nair emphasized that internal friction between the management and the board is now resolved. With board backing for the bank's transformation journey, TMB is prioritizing sustainable growth. The focus remains on strengthening the deposit franchise, diversifying the loan portfolio, and maintaining rigorous compliance standards to ensure long-term stability and institutional success.
