How to Limit Instagram's Use of Your Data for AI and Ads
A step-by-step guide to restricting Meta's ad personalization tools.
1Meta's data collection methods
Instagram uses both in-app interactions and data from other businesses. Meta analyzes your search history, likes, follows, posts, and clicks. It also collects device and network information, location data, and information from connected accounts. This data is used for both ad personalization and Meta AI recommendations. The platform's data collection is comprehensive, covering multiple aspects of user behavior.
2Activity from other businesses control
Introduced in July 2026, the new 'Activity from other businesses' setting limits Meta's use of off-platform data. This setting prevents businesses from using the information they send you for ad personalization, Feed content, and AI responses. To access it, open Account Center in Instagram and find the relevant option. However, this setting doesn't stop the recording of in-app activities.
3Personalization options in Europe
Users in the European Region can choose between 'personalized' or 'less personalized' ads in Account Center. The second option uses fewer signals but Meta still utilizes basic data like age, location, device information, and current session interactions. This setting was specifically designed for GDPR compliance, offering European users more control over their data.
4Tracking limitations on iPhone
iPhone users can disable Instagram's permissions in Settings > Privacy > Tracking. Apple's 'Ask App Not to Track' feature blocks cross-app data collection for advertising purposes. However, this setting doesn't prevent Instagram from recording activities within its own app. It only limits cross-application tracking between different companies' platforms.
5Permission management on Android
On Android devices, navigate to Settings > Apps > Instagram > Permissions to restrict access. You can review and disable sensitive permissions like location, contacts, photos, camera, and microphone. Turning off location removes one direct data source, but Meta can still estimate your location from IP address, network information, and account activities.
6Disabling contact synchronization
In Account Center > Your information and permissions > Upload contacts, select your Instagram account and turn off 'Connect contacts on every device'. This stops future synchronization but doesn't delete already uploaded contacts. To remove those, use 'Manage contacts' in Account Center on Instagram.com. Meta states that deletion may take up to 90 days to complete.
7Impact of AI chats on personalization
Starting December 16, 2025, Meta began using interactions with AI features for content and ad personalization. For example, a conversation about hiking could lead to later recommendations for hiking-related posts or products. Meta doesn't offer a separate setting to exclude AI chats from personalization. However, you can clear chat history using /reset-ai and /reset-all-ais commands.
8Proactive measures for data privacy
Never enter sensitive data like addresses, financial details, or medical information into Meta AI chats. Regularly clear unwanted conversations using reset commands. Users in the EU and UK can object through Meta's Privacy Center. Controlling data used for model training requires separate processes from personalization settings. To minimize data usage, periodically review all these settings.
