Ethereum's New Testnet Platåberget Announced
Community testing begins for the Glamsterdam upgrade.
1What is Platåberget Testnet?
Platåberget is a short-lived testnet created for community testing before Ethereum's Glamsterdam upgrade. Unlike previous devnets, it will remain active for several months, providing developers extensive testing opportunities before transitioning to long-lived testnets like Sepolia and Hoodi. Announced on August 17, 2026, the testnet includes breaking changes requiring tool updates.
2Glamsterdam's Key Changes
The upgrade introduces significant modifications to both consensus and execution layers. Consensus changes like ePBS (Ethereum Proposal Builder Separation) require infrastructure testing from solo stakers to DVT projects. The fork scheduled for August 20 allows sufficient time for validator preparations. Gas repricing affects broader ecosystem tools including wallets and indexers.
3Breaking Points
Tools relying on hardcoded gas limits (wallets, estimators) need updates. EIP-8037 introduces state gas dimension while EIP-2780 decomposes intrinsic costs. Transfers to non-existent accounts now exceed 21,000 gas due to runtime state byte costs (CPSB). This necessitates revisiting existing tool assumptions about transaction pricing structures.
4Technical Specifications
The testnet supports consensus clients like Lighthouse, Prysm and execution clients including Geth, Nethermind. EthPandaOps provides temporary container images until official releases. Network configurations and bootnodes follow devnet-8 specifications. One-click network addition and faucet features streamline user onboarding.
5Community Participation
Platåberget's publicly joinable validator set allows testing stake workflows. A faucet distributes testnet ETH while simplified client configuration lowers barriers. Bugs can be reported via Ethereum R&D Discord or relevant GitHub repositories covering consensus, execution, and builder specs.
6Next Phases
Post-feedback, a non-finality devnet will test edge-case consensus scenarios within the month. Long-lived testnets Sepolia and Hoodi will subsequently upgrade to Glamsterdam. Mainnet transition occurs after all testing milestones are completed successfully, marking Ethereum's next evolution.
7Developer Alerts
Multidimensional gas changes (CPSB - cost per state byte) particularly impact dApp and wallet developers. Dynamic transfer costs (extra state gas for new accounts) invalidate existing estimation models. EIP-8038's state access cost increases further complicate runtime pricing calculations requiring comprehensive testing.
8Strategic Importance
Platåberget provides critical testing grounds before Glamsterdam - one of Ethereum's most significant consensus upgrades. Early community engagement helps prevent mainnet disruptions. Radical gas calculation changes demand rigorous testing for seamless dApp transitions, making this testnet phase indispensable for ecosystem readiness.
