Inaugural Walker Design Triennial Explores Post-Materialist Conceptual Design
The exhibition challenges design optimization through flesh-like speakers and post-apocalyptic installations.
1Inaugural Design Triennial Launch
The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis launched its first Design Triennial, titled Beyond Materialism. Curated by Joseph Grima, the exhibition occupies multiple galleries to challenge mainstream perceptions of design. It features a diverse range of international designers, aiming to provoke reflection on the industry's current fixation on efficiency and product optimization.
2Challenging Design Optimization
Curator Joseph Grima argues that modern society is conditioned to believe everything must be optimized. By showcasing conceptual works, the exhibition intends to disrupt this association between design and utility. The event serves as a platform to pause and evaluate the true meaning of design in a contemporary global context.
3Flesh-like Audio Installations
Spanish designer Lucas Muñoz Muñoz contributed a piece titled All Ears, consisting of latex-covered speakers. These amorphous, flesh-like objects were programmed to play sounds recorded in Minneapolis. The installation functions as a microphone for the city, broadcasting audio sequences both inside the gallery and as a radio sequence for external listeners.
4Post-Apocalyptic Creative Visions
Brussels-based studio Espace Aygo presented a series of appliances constructed from found objects. These works draw inspiration from the studio's 2022 project, which transformed a derelict apartment building into a functional art space. The pieces evoke a post-apocalyptic aesthetic, highlighting the potential for repurposing materials in a resource-constrained future world.
5Historical Design Context
The exhibition bridges contemporary work with historical pieces, such as Alessandro Mendini's 1970s chair, Lassù. By pairing these legacy works with modern conceptual installations, the curators provide a historical trajectory for the field. This juxtaposition emphasizes how radical design thinking has evolved from the late twentieth century to the present day.
6Material Innovation and Reuse
Various participants utilized unconventional materials to explore themes of scarcity and abundance. London-based studio Superflux exhibited objects from their Relics of Abundance series, including a chair crafted from straw and rebar. Other notable contributions include stools made from discarded shells by Wknd Lab and iridescent furniture pieces created by the Athens-based studio Astronauts.
7Exhibition Design and Curation
The exhibition layout features terracotta plinths to support both small and large-scale objects throughout the galleries. Artistic director Asli Altay collaborated with Grima to organize a cohort of avant-garde designers, including Germane Barnes and Theaster Gates. The spatial design emphasizes the materiality of the objects while maintaining a cohesive, gallery-focused narrative.
8Event Duration and Impact
Beyond Materialism remains open at the Walker Art Center from 17 October 2026 until 14 February 2027. The exhibition stands as a significant moment for conceptual design, encouraging visitors to reconsider the life cycle of objects. It highlights a shift toward artistic inquiry rather than purely functional or commercial design outcomes.
